Woman Spots Trapped Tortoise Stranded in the Middle of Mountain Highway

  • 3 min read

Stranded on the Double Yellow Line

Four thick legs kicked at the empty sky above the warm mountain asphalt.

A large tortoise lay rocking on the curve of its upper shell right over the double yellow lines. Two smaller tortoises crawled along the pavement beside it, keeping close to the overturned body while vehicles navigated the winding pass.

A white SUV pulled to the gravel shoulder several yards ahead. The driver door swung open, and a woman ran back toward the centerline, her eyes fixed on the pavement.

She dropped to her knees on the road and placed both palms flat against the tortoise’s dusty carapace. Leaning her weight forward, she gripped the ridged edges of the shell and rolled the reptile right-side up onto a soft mat spread over the asphalt.

Treating the Damaged Shell

The tortoise pulled its head inward, tucking its forelegs tightly against its chest. The woman knelt close, uncapping a clear plastic bottle.

She poured the liquid over a clean white cloth and pressed it gently against the scuffs and cracks on the shell. Dirt lifted away with each slow wipe across the scutes.

Once the surface was clean, she smoothed a sterile square pad directly over the central crack. She reached for a roll of broad blue elastic tape.

Holding the pad in place with one hand, she pressed the blue band firmly across the dome of the shell. Her fingers smoothed the edges down until the wrap held securely against the textured surface.

Carrying the Reptile to Safety

The smaller tortoises waited near the edge of the mat, extending their necks as the woman stood up. She bent at the waist, slid both hands under the base of the large shell, and hoisted the heavy tortoise against her torso.

Turning away from the road, she stepped through the dry grass and loose gravel of the downhill slope. The smaller tortoises turned and matched her direction, scrambling over patches of dirt and stone behind her boots.

The rocky ridge opened up to a wide view of an alpine basin below. Step by step, she carried the heavy reptile down the steep hillside path, moving carefully across the slope.

A Safe Spot by the Water

She reached the bottom of the embankment where green grass met the shoreline of the clear mountain lake. Crouching down at the edge of the turf, she lowered the tortoise until all four of its feet touched the ground.

The two smaller tortoises walked up to the waterline, stopping beside the larger one as it extended its neck forward. The woman stood up straight, stepped back onto the grass, and watched as the group moved together toward the water.
