A Sudden Confrontation In The Marble Lobby
The bank employee slammed his hand against the polished counter and pointed his index finger straight at the elderly woman standing before him.
Daniel Brooks tightened his tie, leaned over the marble desk, and ordered the woman to turn around and leave immediately.
The woman held her worn brown purse with both hands, her knuckles pale against the leather straps.
She told him quietly that she had only arrived to speak directly with the branch manager.
Daniel shook his head, stepped out from behind the teller station, and walked directly into her path.
He raised his voice across the quiet room, telling her that people like her did not get to walk in and make demands.
Hands On The Bag
The woman looked up into his face, her silver hair pulled back in a loose braid.
She kept her grip firm on the handles of her bag as Daniel reached forward and seized the leather strap.
He pulled sharply, forcing her backward toward a row of wooden waiting chairs.
She stumbled into the seat, her voice rising as she commanded him to let go of her belongings.
Daniel stood over the chair, pointing at the glass double doors and threatening to call building security.
The elderly woman sat straight against the wooden backrest and repeated her request to see the manager.
The Document Comes Out
A gray-haired man in a dark three-piece suit walked briskly out of the corner office and stepped between them.
He placed a firm hand on Daniel’s forearm and pushed him back two paces.
The manager asked Daniel if he had laid hands on a customer inside the lobby.
Daniel pointed at the seated woman, insisting she had caused a disturbance the moment she entered.
The woman opened her purse, reached inside, and pulled out an official document embossed with a gold seal.
She extended the paper toward the senior manager and told him to read the name printed across the top.
The manager took the certificate, held it up to the light, and his eyes widened as his mouth fell open.
He read the name aloud: Mrs. Carter.
The manager turned the paper toward Daniel, his voice shaking as he stated that the woman sitting before them owned the entire institution.
The Final Exit
Daniel raised both hands in front of his chest, backing away as he stammered that he had not known.
The manager cut him off, pointed toward the exit doors, and told Daniel he was fired on the spot.
Daniel lowered his head, staring at the marble floor as his shoulders slumped forward.
Mrs. Carter stood up from the wooden chair, adjusted the strap of her brown purse over her arm, and smoothed down the front of her knit cardigan.
She turned her back to the teller desk and walked steadily toward the bright glass exit doors, the holes along the back of her beige sweater clearly visible as the doors swung open.
