Diner In Torn Clothes Asks For A Menu And Faces Hostility

  • 3 min read

A Request At The Table

The elderly man placed his hands flat against the crisp white tablecloth and looked up at the staff member.

His grey shirt was frayed at the collar, with distinct holes torn across the fabric of his chest and suspenders holding up worn trousers.

“Could I have a menu, please?” he asked, sitting upright in the wooden dining chair.

The waiter let out an exaggerated laugh, tilting his head back before locking his eyes onto the customer.

“You?” the waiter asked, stepping closer to the edge of the table. “You think you can afford to eat here?”

The older man did not raise his voice or shift in his seat. He kept his posture straight against the dark wood backrest.

“I just want to have dinner,” he replied evenly. “Please bring me a menu.”

Drawing The Room’s Attention

The waiter reached down and slammed a heavy green menu onto the white cloth with a loud thud.

“Look around,” the waiter shouted, sweeping his arm outward across the crowded dining area. “This place is not for people like you!”

Patrons at surrounding tables stopped their conversations and turned their heads toward the disturbance.

A woman in a dark green dress lowered her fork and stared across the aisle with wide eyes.

A man across the room set his wine glass down on the table, turning completely around in his seat to watch the confrontation.

The waiter leaned in close, pointing his index finger directly into the elderly customer’s face. “Get out! You’re wasting my time.”

“You should not judge someone by their clothes,” the seated man said softly, his voice remaining level.

“I know exactly who belongs in this restaurant,” the waiter snapped back, snatching the menu back off the table with both hands.

An Unexpected Arrival

Footsteps echoed across the dining room floor as another man in a tailored black suit and dark tie hurried into the aisle.

“What is going on here?” the suited manager demanded, stepping directly into the space between the two men.

The waiter gestured vigorously toward the seated man with the menu still clutched in his hand. “This guy came in here and refused to leave.”

The manager turned his head toward the table, his posture instantly stiffening as his gaze fell upon the older customer.

“Sir, you’re here?” the manager asked, his tone dropping instantly.

The waiter’s brow furrowed in confusion as he looked between both men. “Wait, you know him?”

“Know him?” the manager shouted, throwing his hands out in frustration. “He owns this restaurant!”

The Final Decision

The waiter’s jaw tightened as his hands dropped limply to his sides, the menu hanging loosely in his grip.

He shifted his weight backward by a half-step, unable to meet the seated man’s gaze.

The elderly owner gripped the edges of the white tablecloth, pushed his chair back, and stood up onto his feet.

He smoothed down the frayed fabric of his shirt and turned directly toward the manager.

“You judged me because of my clothes,” the owner said, looking directly across the table.

The manager remained still, his head dipping downward as he listened to the instruction.

“He is no longer representing this restaurant,” the owner stated, turning his eyes back toward the room as the waiter stood silent in his black vest.
