Hungry Street Dog With Puppies Searches For Food On Crowded Corner

  • 3 min read

Searching The Concrete Curb

The thin mother dog lowered her snout into the metal storm drain, nudging empty candy wrappers aside with her nose.

Three tiny puppies stumbled behind her back legs, their bellies tucked high against their ribs as pedestrians hurried past on the sidewalk.

The mother pawed at a greasy paper scrap on the pavement, trying to find any scrap of discarded food left behind by the morning foot traffic.

Her ears twitched backward with every passing car, her frame shifting defensively between the busy street and her trio of young pups.

The smallest pup reached up, nudging her side to nurse, but she pulled forward to keep sniffing the curb line.

An Extended Hand

A woman walking down the block slowed her pace and dropped into a low crouch a few feet away from the drain.

She held out an open palm, keeping her fingers completely still at ground level.

The mother dog lifted her head, stiffening her front legs while fixing her dark eyes on the outstretched fingers.

One by one, the three puppies broke away from the gutter, their short tails wagging as they trotted directly toward the woman’s sneakers.

The mother followed behind them slowly, extending her neck to sniff the air right above the woman’s knuckles.

Laying Out A Real Meal

Minutes later, the woman walked back across the crosswalk carrying a large brown bag of dry dog food and a bottle of clean water.

She set three wide disposable trays down in a row along the sidewalk tiles.

She tipped the brown bag, pouring mounds of kibble into each container until the kibble spilled over the edges.

Next to the food trays, she cut open a clear plastic container and filled it to the brim with fresh water from her bottle.

The three pups immediately buried their faces into the bowls, crunching down on the hard food without lifting their heads.

The mother stood beside them, taking large mouthfuls from the third tray while keeping one eye on the nearby road.

Resting On The Sidewalk

Once the food trays were emptied, the woman pulled a thick fleece blanket from her bag and shook it open across the concrete.

She placed the water dish right at the corner of the fabric, smoothing out the folds against the pavement.

The mother dog stepped onto the soft cloth, circled once, and lowered her ribs onto the blanket.

The three puppies immediately tumbled over her paws, pressing their bodies against her warm stomach to nurse.

The woman sat down flat on the sidewalk beside them, resting her palm gently on the mother’s tan-and-white crown, stroking the soft fur between her ears while the mother closed her eyes.
