Confrontation in the Glass Office
A grey-haired executive held a thick manila folder tight against his chest and stepped toward David.
The quiet floor of the modern office building offered no distraction from the confrontation unfolding near the glass wall partition.
The senior manager adjusted his posture, maintaining eye contact as he tapped his fingers against the paper edge of the document folder.
“David, this was under your responsibility,” the executive stated, his tone firm and direct.
Standing just behind David, another employee in a dark green button-down shirt gripped his hands tightly in front of his belt.
The man in the green shirt pressed his lips together and looked down at the carpeted floor without offering a single word.
David stood quietly in his dark blazer, absorbing the direct statement from his supervisor.
Taking the Blame
David lowered his eyes for a short second to glance at the file folder held in the manager’s hand.
Instead of turning his head toward his colleague standing nearby, David shifted his weight forward and raised his chin.
“It was my responsibility,” David said, keeping his voice calm and steady.
“I should have checked it,” he continued, taking full ownership of the error that had occurred on the project file.
The manager paused, taking a moment to look at David’s facial expression before letting out a slow breath.
“You’ll need to stay late and fix it,” the executive instructed, tucking the folder under his arm.
David nodded once in agreement, offering no excuses or pushback to his superior’s command.
The manager turned on his heel and walked down the hallway, leaving the two team members standing near the glass partition.
Working Late into the Evening
As the sun dipped down outside the high-rise office windows, the ambient overhead lighting switched off across the floor.
David sat alone in his workstation enclosure, illuminated by the bright blue glare of a computer monitor.
His fingers moved across the mechanical keyboard, entering corrected figures line by line onto the spreadsheet screen.
Spread out next to his keyboard were loose sheets of reference paper and a small yellow notepad marked with handwritten notes.
The sound of soft footsteps echoed down the empty corridor as a figure approached the doorway of the office cubicle.
The colleague in the dark green shirt stepped into the doorway and pulled his hands out from his trousers pockets.
He stood beside the desk and watched David type for a moment before breaking the quiet setting.
“Why did you take the blame for me?” the colleague asked, looking down at David with a questioning gaze.
A Message of Grace
David paused his typing and lifted his fingers off the keyboard, allowing the room to return to complete stillness.
He rotated his office chair slightly to face the young man standing beside his desk.
“Because I know what it feels like to be given another chance,” David answered softly, his expression relaxed and open.
The co-worker swallowed hard, his eyes widening slightly as he listened to David’s explanation.
David rested his forearm on the wooden desk edge, near his yellow notepad and ballpoint pen.
“Grace can change what judgment never could,” David spoke, looking directly at his colleague.
The man in the green shirt took a step back, his shoulders relaxing as a faint smile appeared on his face.
David turned his head back toward his computer screen, resting his right hand gently over the optical mouse as the monitor light reflected off his dark jacket sleeve.
