A Desperate Request for Support
A woman counted three ten-dollar bills handed to her across the living room.
Tears tracked down her cheeks as she held the small stack of paper money.
The man in the green polo shirt stood with his arms folded, looking down at her without moving.
She gestured with her right hand, pointing out that six months had passed without any financial help for their child.
He leaned forward, raising his voice while telling her that spending time with him was the only way she would receive more funds.
She shook her head, explaining her demanding schedule between two jobs and her classes.
He pulled a thick wad of hundred-dollar bills from his pocket, holding it near her face.
He stated the money was available, but her son simply would not be getting any of it.
She covered her mouth with both hands, lowering her head as she backed away.
A Mother Running Out of Options
Outside a suburban house, she stood near the front door wearing a white button-down shirt and a black skirt.
She pleaded with the man in the yellow shirt, asking him to supervise their son so she could head to her job shift.
He glared at her, stepping forward onto the porch step.
He yelled directly into her face, commanding her and the young boy to leave his property immediately.
The young boy stood beside her, holding her hand while looking up at his father’s shouting face.
She turned, holding her hand over her nose as she walked down the driveway with her child.
Inside her vehicle, she held her phone against her ear while steering with one hand.
She asked a friend over the phone if she could watch the child until her shift ended.
The friend refused over the speaker, stating she had her own commitments and could not assist.
She wiped tears from her jawline with the back of her wrist, scrolling through her contact list.
She placed another call to her supervisor, explaining her inability to find child care for the day.
The manager on the receiver stated that failing to appear would result in termination of her employment.
She pressed her hands over her eyes, taking a quick breath before declaring that she was on her way.
A Panic at the Office
In a brightly lit office filled with gray cubicles, she stood typing on a laptop mounted on a standing desk.
A male coworker pushed open a glass door in the background, waving his arms toward the open room.
He shouted to the office floor that an unattended child had been spotted inside a parked car in the lot.
Her eyes opened wide, her hands freezing over the keyboard keys.
She turned toward the exterior windows, looking down at the parking area below.
Emergency vehicles with flashing red and blue lights blocked the driving lanes in the lot.
She dropped her tablet onto the office floor, the plastic casing bouncing against the carpeted hallway.
She sprinted through the glass double doors, her heels clicking against the hard tile floor.
The Consequences Unfold
She ran out into the asphalt parking lot toward the row of police cruisers.
A police officer stepped into her path, placing both hands onto her upper arms to halt her movement.
He spoke to her in a low tone, shaking his head slightly while looking directly into her eyes.
Her knees bent as she sank toward the pavement, her face contorting as she let out a loud cry.
Two officers stepped behind her, grabbing her wrists and pulling them behind her back.
The metal handcuffs clicked locked around her wrists as she looked back toward the police cruisers parked under the afternoon sun.
