Stranded Wheelchair User Faces Breathing Crisis When Medication Falls Out Of Reach

  • 3 min read

A Sudden Loss of Breath

An elderly man pressed his right palm flat against his chest, clutching his button-up shirt as his torso jerked forward from the seat of his wheelchair.

His left arm extended downward, fingers straining toward the pavement just beyond the footrests.

A blue inhaler lay resting on the asphalt three feet ahead of his front wheels, completely out of reach.

His mouth opened wide as he pulled in shallow, strained gasps of air.

Vehicles hummed down the adjacent road, moving past without slowing down.

On the sidewalk, a passerby in a grey shirt slowed his pace, looked down at the inhaler on the ground, and pointed a finger toward the plastic tube.

The pedestrian shifted his weight, turned back around, and walked away down the path without picking it up.

Straining for the Fallen Medication

The man in the wheelchair leaned further over his knees, his knuckles white against the metal frame.

His eyes squeezed shut as another wave of tightness hit his chest.

Every time his fingertips reached into the empty space, his balance slipped, forcing him to pull back into an upright position.

The distance between his outstretched hand and the blue canister never changed.

His breathing grew heavier, his shoulders rising and falling with rapid, uneven tremors.

Behind him, other pedestrians walked along the tree-lined path, their backs turned as they disappeared into the distance.

His head tilted back against the wheelchair rest, his eyes blinking slowly under the midday sun.

An Unexpected Helper Steps Onto the Path

Along the edge of the curb, a brown and black dog trotted into view, ears pointed upright.

The dog slowed its gait as it neared the wheelchair, lowering its snout directly over the fallen inhaler.

It nudged the blue plastic cylinder with its nose, sniffing the edges.

With a delicate tilt of its jaw, the dog gripped the plastic casing between its teeth, lifting it cleanly off the rough pavement.

The man opened his eyes and looked down, lowering his open palm toward the ground.

The dog stepped forward two paces, closed the gap, and placed the inhaler directly into the man’s open fingers.

The man closed his grip around the canister, steadying his hand against his lap.

A Moment of Relief

He lifted the inhaler to his mouth, pressed down on the metal top, and took in a full breath of medication.

His shoulders dropped away from his neck as his chest expanded smoothly.

He let the air out slowly through his lips, resting his hands across his knees.

The dog sat down on the pavement directly beside the front tire of the wheelchair, its tail sweeping lightly against the concrete.

The man reached his hand across the armrest and rested his fingers on the dog’s crown, gently smoothing down the fur between its ears while looking into its face.
