A Sudden Strike on the Sidewalk
The woman’s white sneaker struck the wooden crate, sending dozens of red and yellow apples rolling across the concrete sidewalk.
She planted her feet, waved her hands in the air, and shouted directly into the elderly vendor’s face. The man held his hands up in confusion, his fingers open and trembling slightly.
Beside him on the curb, a large white dog sat completely still. The dog’s dark eyes tracked the woman’s pointing finger, never once glancing down at the scattered fruit.
With a final sharp word, the woman spun on her heel and strode down the bustling city street. Her footsteps faded into the background noise of passing traffic.
The vendor lowered his head into his weathered palm, resting his elbow on the remaining crate of oranges. His shoulders slumped forward beneath his dark jacket, his cap tilted low over his white beard.
Quiet Steps Into the Mud
The dog turned his head toward his owner, letting out a soft breath against the old man’s knee. He waited a few seconds, watching the man’s hand stay pressed against his brow.
Then, the dog stood up on all four paws. He did not sniff the bruised apples lying along the gutter.
Instead, he stepped off the raised curb and walked straight toward a wide puddle of dark brown mud settled in a depression in the asphalt. The water was thick with silt and street grime.
The dog walked directly into the center of the pool. He lifted each paw slowly, pressing down into the murky sediment until the dark slush rose past his ankles and coated his white legs.
He lowered his body slightly, dragging his thick white coat through the sludge until the damp grey muck clung to his belly and flanks.
He climbed back onto the sidewalk, leaving a trail of wet, black paw prints behind him as he trotted briskly down the block.
Chaos at the Outdoor Table
Two blocks away, the same woman sat comfortably at a wrought-iron patio table outside an upscale sidewalk cafe. A large plate of grilled food and fresh salad sat before her, flanked by cold beverages.
She was laughing and conversing with nearby diners, leaning forward over her lunch with her hands resting on the edge of the tabletop.
Without warning, a heavy spray of grey mud crashed across the tablecloth. The large dog leaped directly onto the iron table, placing all four muddy paws among the plates and glasses.
The dog tucked his head, arched his spine, and gave a violent, full-body shake from nose to tail. Muddy water, street dirt, and thick droplets flew in every direction across the patio.
The woman threw both hands in front of her face, letting out a shriek as thick brown mud splattered across her forehead, her cheeks, and her red shirt. Her plate of food was buried under dark street grime.
Nearby patrons covered their mouths, their eyes wide as they pointed at the mess covering the woman’s clothes. Before anyone could grab his collar, the dog jumped cleanly off the table and darted back down the sidewalk.
A Warm Welcome on the Corner
The dog trotted down the sidewalk at a steady pace, his coat now a mottled grey and brown from head to tail. His tail swung gently from side to side as he approached the fruit stand.
The old man was still seated on his crate beside the spilled apples, his head resting against his chest. Hearing the rhythmic patter of paws on the stone, he lifted his chin.
The dog slowed to a walk, wagging his tail and coming to a stop directly between the man’s knees.
The old vendor looked at the splattered mud covering the dog’s fur, and his eyes crinkled at the corners. He let out a low chuckle, reached out with both hands, and gently cradled the muddy dog’s face between his open palms.
