Bison Mother Watches Closely As Man Steps Toward Her Trapped Calf

  • 3 min read

Stranded On The Fence Line

The young bison’s cinnamon-colored torso pressed hard against the twisted wire as its front hooves scrambled in the dry prairie grass.

Its small head pushed forward through the opening, but the tight steel line caught its flank, pinning its hind legs on the other side.

With every tiny lunge forward, the sharp barbs snagged deeper into its thick reddish coat.

The calf opened its mouth wide and let out sharp, high-pitched bleats across the pasture.

Just a few paces back stood its mother, a towering dark figure with curved horns pointing straight up toward the sky.

She lowered her massive head, her dark eyes fixed entirely on the struggling youngster as she took measured steps closer to the boundary.

A Careful Approach With Wire Cutters

A rancher dressed in a tan work shirt and blue jeans lowered himself onto one knee right beside the fence line.

In his right hand, he held a pair of heavy steel fence pliers with red rubber handles.

He placed a thick leather work glove gently on the calf’s woolly shoulder to keep the animal from thrashing against the sharp barbs.

“Easy, easy buddy,” he muttered quietly under his breath, keeping his voice steady and low.

The calf continued to cry out, its chest heaving as the leather glove rested flat against its ribcage.

The mother bison remained standing just feet away in the tall grass, watching every movement of the gloved hands.

Releasing The Bound Wire

The man slid the jaws of the fencing pliers around the tight barbed strand pinning the calf’s hip.

He repositioned his grip on the handles, taking care to keep the cutting edge clear of the calf’s tender hide.

The youngster let out another loud call, its ears pinning back against its skull as the steel jaws aligned around the metal strand.

With a firm squeeze of both hands, the rancher clamped down on the long handles.

The wire snapped with a sudden metallic click, immediately losing its rigid hold across the animal’s side.

The loose strand sprang outward, clearing the path between the wooden posts.

Rejoining The Herd

The little bison immediately pulled its back legs through the opened gap and planted all four hooves on the ground.

It paused for a brief split second, turning its dark muzzle toward the open prairie.

Then it broke into a full gallop, kicking up dust through the yellow grass.

The massive mother bison pivoted her heavy shoulders and matched the youngster’s pace instantly.

Side by side, the two brown shapes sprinted across the wide expanse of rangeland, heading toward a white pickup truck parked far off on the horizon.
