What Happened When A Security Guard Returned A Dropped Wallet

  • 4 min read

Running Down the Lobby

A young security guard jogged across the polished marble lobby, holding a black leather wallet high in his right hand.

He called out toward a grey-haired man walking toward the elevators in a dark three-piece suit. The older gentleman stopped, turning slowly to face the guard while sliding a hand into his coat pocket.

Finding his pocket empty, the older man’s eyebrows rose and his eyes widened. He stared directly at the black wallet as the guard stepped closer and extended his hand.

“Where did you find that?” the older man asked, taking the wallet with both hands. The guard pointed back toward the elevator doors, explaining that it had been sitting on the floor right beside the entrance.

Checking the Leather Wallet

The older man unclipped the leather fold and flipped it open. Inside, rows of credit cards sat tucked into clean leather slots alongside a driver’s license.

He pulled open the bill compartment, revealing a thick stack of hundred-dollar bills packed tightly against the lining. His thumb flipped through the paper currency, confirming that every single bill remained untouched.

He closed the leather fold and looked up at the young guard standing tall in his grey button-down shirt. “You could have taken the money,” he said, holding the wallet between them.

The young guard offered a small, quiet smile and admitted that the thought had crossed his mind. He rested his hands loosely by his sides as he explained what his father had always taught him growing up.

He shared that if someone had to compromise their character just to gain something, they had already lost. The grey-haired man raised an eyebrow, adjusting his silk tie as he listened to every word.

He asked the young man what his job was at the building, and the guard touched the badge sewn onto his chest, replying that he worked night security. The older man gave a firm nod, thanked him for returning the property, and turned toward the elevator.

An Unexpected Morning Summons

The following morning, the young guard entered the hotel manager’s private office. The manager stood behind a large mahogany desk, holding a desk phone receiver in one hand while gesturing for the guard to come inside.

The guard’s brow furrowed and his shoulder muscles stiffened as he stepped toward the desk, asking if he was in trouble or if he had done something wrong.

The manager chuckled softly, placing the receiver back onto its cradle, and reached into a desk drawer. He slid a crisp white envelope across the polished wood surface toward the guard.

The guard picked up the envelope, unsealed the flap, and pulled out a gold metal card alongside a folded piece of paper. He unfolded the note to read a short handwritten message: “Meet me at 10 a.m. – Richard Hayes.”

His eyes widened as he recognized the name of the billionaire executive who owned properties across the entire city skyline.

Standing Before the High-Rise Window

By mid-morning, the guard stood inside a spacious executive suite on the top floor of a downtown skyscraper. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows framed a panoramic view of the sunlit towers outside.

The grey-haired billionaire stood beside the window with his hands folded behind his back. Without turning around immediately, he announced that he had dropped the wallet in the lobby entirely on purpose.

The guard shifted his feet, looking around the expansive office with a puzzled expression. The billionaire turned around, stepped over to his wide wooden desk, and picked up a multi-page paper contract.

He explained that he was looking for someone to manage security across his entire new hotel enterprise, having interviewed dozens of applicants without finding anyone trustworthy enough.

He handed the document across the desk, pointing to the heading marked for the new management position. The guard tilted his head down, staring at the printed lines of the employment agreement in disbelief.

Five years passed, and the young guard walked down a wide, brightly lit hallway in a tailored navy suit, adjusting his watch as he walked toward a heavy wooden door.

A brass plaque beside the doorframe read “DIRECTOR OF SECURITY.” Inside the corner office, the silver-haired executive walked in with a warm smile, asking if the director still remembered the lost leather wallet.

The younger man laughed softly, nodding as he stood near his desk. The older man placed a hand gently on his shoulder, reminding him to hold fast to the values that got him there.

An elderly woman wearing a cream knit cardigan sat comfortably in an armchair inside a warm living room, looking directly into the camera lens as she folded her hands in her lap.
