The Final Request
A crying woman clasped her hands together against her chest and pleaded with the landlord standing on her front porch.
Tears ran down her cheeks as she asked for one more week to pay her overdue rent.
The man in the sharp charcoal suit crossed his arms over his white collared shirt.
He explained that he had already waited three months and that the property was scheduled to be sold the very next day.
Her shoulders sank as she admitted that her husband had left her with nothing to her name.
She lowered her head, wiping a tear from her nose, and asked if she could at least take her late mother’s old upright piano.
An Inscription in the Wood
The landlord stepped past the threshold and looked into the dimly lit living room.
An old upright piano sat against the far wall, covered completely by a plain white cloth.
He gave a small nod and told her she was free to take the instrument with her.
The woman hurried into the room and pulled the heavy cloth away from the polished wooden frame.
As the fabric slid off, the afternoon light caught a set of words deeply carved into the side panel of the wood.
The landlord walked closer, bending down to inspect the scratched lettering cut into the dark finish.
The inscription read: ‘For Emma, so she never forgets where she came from.’
A Connection From the Past
The man stopped moving and turned to look directly at the woman.
He asked her who her mother was, his voice dropping as he gestured toward the carved letters.
She placed her right hand over her silver locket necklace and whispered that her mother’s name was Emma.
He asked if her mother had worked behind the counter at the old Riverside Hotel decades ago.
When she nodded in confusion, the landlord leaned his hands against his knees and sat down heavily on a wooden chair nearby.
He looked down at his watch before explaining that twenty-five years ago, he had been a homeless teenager sleeping on the wet pavement behind that exact hotel.
He recalled how Emma had found him shivering in the rain, bringing him a heavy coat, a hot meal, and a dishwasher job inside the hotel kitchen.
The woman stared at him as tears welled in her eyes again, whispering that her mother had never shared that story with anyone.
A New Beginning
The landlord stood up from his chair and straightened the lapels of his suit jacket.
He looked around the room before turning back to face her with a soft smile on his face.
Three years later, young children sat on wooden benches inside a brightly lit storefront classroom, practicing scales on multiple upright pianos.
A wooden sign hanging outside the front window read: ‘Emma’s Music House – Free Lessons for Children in Need.’
The landlord stepped through the glass front door wearing a dark wool overcoat and greeted the woman sitting at the front counter.
She stood up with a wide smile and walked him over to the corner where her mother’s original wooden piano was positioned.
She placed her fingertips gently onto the keys, playing a soft melody while the students continued playing around them.
The landlord stood beside her with his hands resting in his coat pockets, watching the children smile as they hit the piano keys together.
