Woman Takes Cash From Shopkeeper’s Counter Until Her Son Arrives

  • 3 min read

Caught Off Guard in a Coffee Shop

A woman in a beige trench coat slipped her hand across the wooden table and grabbed a smartphone.

She pulled the device into her open purse and pulled the zipper shut in one fluid motion.

Across the room, a man in a denim jacket watched her hands move.

He stepped toward the register and pointed his finger toward the doorway where she was exiting.

The cashier leaned over the counter, his eyes wide as he processed the warning.

By the time both men pushed through the front glass door, the sidewalk outside was empty.

A Missing Envelope at the Local Bookstore

The next morning, the same woman pushed open the wooden frame door of a small neighborhood bookstore.

She carried a leather-bound journal to the front counter where an elderly man with thick glasses stood waiting.

The shop owner pressed the metal keys of an old cash register and quoted her the total amount.

As he turned around to pull a brown paper bag from a high wooden shelf, her eyes fell on a white envelope near the register.

Handwritten black ink on the front read, “For Mr. Harris’s heart surgery.”

She reached across the glass counter, slid the envelope into her coat pocket, and took the paper bag from his hands.

Outside on the pavement, she pulled the paper flap open and counted six one-hundred-dollar bills inside.

She stood still near the curb, staring down at the cash before sliding it back into her shoulder bag.

Returning to the Counter Three Days Later

Three days passed before the woman walked back down the same brick sidewalk toward the shop.

The elderly owner sat on a wooden bench outside, turning the pages of a hardback book.

She stopped beside the outdoor counter and waited for him to look up from his reading.

Water gathered in her eyes as she reached into her bag and laid the white envelope onto the counter.

The shopkeeper stared at the handwriting on the paper, then looked up into her face.

She pressed her forehead downward, her chin trembling as she spoke to him.

Before the owner could slide the money back, a young boy wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt walked out from the doorway.

An Unexpected Gift on the Counter

The boy held a square cardboard box in both hands and stood directly beside his mother.

She turned her head quickly, her tears wiping across her cheeks as she looked at him.

The boy placed the box down next to the envelope and looked the shopkeeper in the eyes.

He explained that he had sold his video game console the previous afternoon to help pay the household bills.

His mother covered her mouth with both hands, lowering her head toward the wooden counter surface.

The elderly man looked at the boy’s box, then pushed the white envelope back toward the mother’s hands.

She shook her head, pulled an extra hundred-dollar bill from her wallet, and set it on top of the counter.

The owner shook his head, motioned toward a display shelf full of children’s picture books near the window, and asked her to buy those for the local school instead.

She used a tissue to wipe her eyes, picked up the books, and took her son’s hand as they turned toward the street.

The elderly man stood in the open doorway of his shop, watching the mother and son walk down the cobblestone sidewalk together.
