A Sudden Discovery In The Tall Grass
Thick gray mud swallowed the young foal up to its neck as its small hooves churned against the suction beneath the surface.
Every kick only seemed to anchor the animal deeper into the sunken pit carved into the open field.
A black-and-white border collie paced the rim of the hole, lowering its snout toward the wet earth before snapping its head back up to bark.
The foal lifted its chin, dark eyes wide as wet clay dripped from its mane onto the churning sludge below.
The dog barked twice more, planted its front paws on the dry grass above, and spun around toward the distant farmhouse.
The Run Across The Stubble Fields
The border collie sprinted full speed down the narrow dirt path cutting through the golden stalks of standing wheat.
Its paws kicked up small bursts of dry soil as it bounded toward an open barnyard where a red pickup truck stood with its hood raised.
A farmer in denim overalls was leaning over the engine block, untangling a coil of bright yellow tow rope from the front bumper.
The dog arrived at a dead run, leaping up onto its hind legs and planting its front paws against the farmer’s chest.
The dog gripped the yellow rope in its jaws, pulling backward with all its weight while letting out short, urgent yelps.
The man set down his tools, secured his grip around the bundle of yellow rope, and followed the dog as it darted back into the field.
Pulling Against The Grip Of The Mud
Back at the edge of the pit, the foal had stopped thrashing, its neck resting heavily against the dark rim of wet earth.
The farmer dropped to his knees in the dry grass, uncoiling the thick yellow line and leaning out over the edge.
He guided the heavy rope beneath the foal’s chest and shoulders, working his gloved fingers through the thick layer of wet muck.
The dog stood directly beside him at the rim, ears forward, tracking every movement in the hole.
Bracing his boots against the hard clay ridge, the man pulled backward with his entire upper body, leaning his weight into the strain.
The foal lunged upward, finding momentary purchase as the farmer hauled the rope hand over hand.
With a loud sucking pop, the foal’s front legs broke through the surface of the mud, scrambled over the dry lip of the pit, and rolled out onto the flat ground.
Rest In The Golden Hour
The farmer fell backward into the dry stubble, his arms falling wide as he caught his breath under the open sky.
The young horse, coated from ears to hooves in wet clay, climbed immediately to its feet on wobbly legs.
It walked straight toward the man lying on the ground, dipping its head low to inspect him.
The farmer pushed himself up into a seated position and pulled the border collie tight against his chest, scratching behind the dog’s ears.
The mud-covered foal stepped closer in the amber sunset light, pressing its dark muzzle softly against the man’s cap and the dog’s head as they sat together in the field.
