An Unwelcome Visitor on the Showroom Floor
The salesman stepped directly into the older man’s path, planting his leather shoes firmly on the polished white tiles. His chin tilted upward, and his hand chopped through the air to block the entrance.
The visitor wore a faded brown canvas jacket with small tears along the pocket seams. His grey trousers were worn at the knees, and his scuffed brown boots stood out against the gleaming showroom floor.
“Stop right there,” the salesman barked, leaning forward until their faces were inches apart. “You clearly cannot afford anything in this showroom.”
The older man did not flinch. His shoulders remained loose, his hands resting easily near his sides. “I didn’t ask you what I could afford,” he replied quietly.
The salesman jerked his thumb toward the glass doors behind him. “Then do not waste my time. This isn’t a place for window shoppers.”
A Gentle Hand on the Silver Paint
Instead of turning back toward the exit, the older man walked past him toward a sleek silver sedan parked under the bright overhead lights. He reached out with an open palm, letting his fingertips glide toward the driver’s side door handle.
The salesman sprinted forward, his face twisting as he slapped his own palm against the window frame above the man’s hand. “Don’t touch that car!” he shouted, his teeth clenched. “Do you have any idea how much it costs?”
“Yes,” the older man answered with a soft chuckle.
The salesman threw his head back in mocking laughter. He pointed a rigid index finger straight into the man’s face. “Then prove you belong here.”
The visitor looked up, his grey eyes steady and calm beneath his furrowed brow. “You should be very careful about who you decide doesn’t belong.”
The Manager Steps Into the Circle
The salesman turned around and spotted a senior executive walking across the floor in a dark grey suit and patterned tie. “Finally!” the salesman yelled, waving his arm. “Tell this man he needs to leave!”
The executive approached at a brisk pace, his eyes focused on the dispute. But the moment his gaze shifted to the man in the canvas jacket, his stride faltered.
The executive’s mouth fell slightly open. His hands dropped to his sides, and he stared in total disbelief. “You came back,” the executive murmured under his breath.
The salesman looked between both men, his forehead wrinkling in confusion. “Wait, you know him?”
The executive turned sharply toward the salesman, his voice rising in anger. “Know him? He owns this dealership!”
A Sudden Cost for Reckless Pride
The salesman’s mouth dropped open. All the color drained from his face as he took an awkward half-step backward.
The older man turned toward the salesman, speaking in an even, measured tone. “I judged you by how you treated someone you thought had no power.”
The salesman stammered, raising both hands defensively with his palms facing forward. “Sir, I didn’t know who you were.”
The executive stepped forward, extending a stern index finger directly at the salesman’s chest, his jaw set in a hard line as he delivered the dismissal.
