A Hungry Stranger Asked For Food But He Kept Walking Away

  • 4 min read

A Cold Evening Walk

A young man pushed open the heavy glass doors of a city restaurant, clutching a tightly folded white paper bag filled with hot takeout food.

He walked out onto the concrete pavement, his dark denim jacket buttoned against the chilly air as he kept his eyes on the sidewalk ahead.

Beside the brick wall of a nearby store, an elderly man sat hunched over on a thin sheet of cardboard, wearing a frayed brown coat marked with small tears along the sleeves.

The old man lifted one palm slightly toward the passerby, his voice raspy and faint as he asked if there was anything to spare for a bite to eat.

The young man pulled the paper bag closer to his chest, shaking his head while explaining that this meal was his own dinner for the night.

He kept moving forward, taking long steps down the avenue while the old man lowered his arm back onto his lap and stared down at his shoes.

The streetlights flickered to life along the roadway, casting long shadows across the empty sidewalk as traffic moved slowly past the storefronts.

A Change Of Heart

After taking a dozen steps down the sidewalk, the young man slowed his pace, staring straight toward the glowing streetlights in the distance.

He stopped near the corner, resting his hand on the paper bag while his eyes darted back toward the alleyway behind him.

He turned around entirely, taking a deep breath as he walked back toward the figure seated on the cold brick floor.

Holding a warm cardboard takeout box in his hands, he stepped closer to the seated man and lowered himself down beside the cardboard sheet.

He looked directly at the older man’s weathered face, noting the deep lines around his eyes and his long, silver beard.

He asked the man quietly when he had last eaten a proper meal.

The old man lifted his chin slowly, his eyes reflecting the soft ambient glow from the glass shop windows behind him, and replied that his last meal had been yesterday morning.

Sharing What Matters

The young man lowered his head, his hands steadying as he unlatched the lid of the warm food container held between his palms.

A small plume of steam rose into the cool air as the cardboard flaps folded back to reveal the warm food inside.

He sat down directly on the hard pavement beside the old man, placing his boots flat on the sidewalk and shifting closer.

Holding the open box firmly with both hands, he extended it toward the seated man, telling him that this meal belonged to both of them now.

The old man reached out two weathered hands, resting his fingers along the sides of the warm container as he took it into his lap.

A smile softened the creases around his eyes, his shoulders dropping as he pulled the container close to his chest.

A Moment On The Sidewalk

A short distance down the street, another passerby in a plain gray t-shirt approached an elderly man standing near a wall in a denim jacket.

He reached forward with both hands, offering a tall brown paper sack along with a clear bottle of water.

The elderly man took the bag into his grasp, gripping the rolled paper top securely while nodding his head repeatedly.

The younger man stood close by, his posture relaxed and his hands at his sides as he spoke softly across the narrow gap between them.

The old man held the brown paper sack firmly against his denim coat, looking up at the younger man who stood smiling on the sidewalk beside him.
