An Encounter Outside The Bakery
A man dressed in a dark blue suit pushed open the bakery door while clutching a brown paper bag filled with fresh baguettes.
On the pavement just outside the entrance, an elderly man in a tattered coat sat resting against the glass facade.
The older man cupped his weathered hands together and looked up, asking if the passerby could spare a small piece of bread.
The man in the suit checked the silver watch on his left wrist, shook his head, and continued walking down the busy sidewalk.
Left behind near the shop entrance, the old man adjusted his frayed knit cap and cradled a small brown puppy against his chest.
He looked down at his palms, counting the couple of small copper coins resting in his fingers.
A Hidden Journey Down The Alley
A short distance down the street, the businessman sat at a sidewalk cafe table with a paper coffee cup held between his hands.
He turned his head toward the corner of the building and caught sight of the elderly man walking slowly past the storefront windows.
Curiosity caught his attention, and he lowered his cup to watch as the old man disappeared into a narrow brick alleyway.
Sitting on a thin scrap of corrugated cardboard along the concrete alley wall was a young boy wearing a frayed grey sweater filled with torn threads.
The elderly man leaned down near the steps, pulled a small baked roll from his jacket pocket, and reached out to hand it to the child.
Sharing What Little Remains
The young boy took the golden roll with both hands, broke off a small piece, and took a bite while staring up into the old man’s face.
The elderly man rested one hand on his knee, smiling quietly while watching the boy eat without taking a single piece for himself.
From the corner near the street, the businessman stood watching the exchange from behind the building wall.
His jaw loosened slightly, and he let his arms drop to his sides as he observed the two figures on the concrete curb.
He turned around slowly and began walking back toward the glass doors of the neighborhood bakery.
Passing The Gesture Forward
A few minutes later, the businessman stepped back out onto the sidewalk carrying a fresh brown paper bag stamped with the bakery logo.
He navigated down the block until he came across a younger man sitting on a cardboard box while holding a small baby wrapped in a blanket.
The businessman stopped directly in front of them, crouched down on the concrete, and extended the full bag of food toward the father’s hands.
The father tilted his head up with wide eyes, extending one arm to take the large paper bag into his lap.
The businessman stood upright, looking down at the father and child as they opened the top of the paper bag together on the sidewalk.
