Emergency Crews Rush To Save Horse Stranded In Mud Ditch

  • 2 min read

Trapped Along the Shoulder

A black horse lay pinned on its side in the narrow, muck-filled drainage trench beside the wet highway asphalt.

Its dark coat was caked with wet gray clay, and its neck rested limply against the steep, straw-covered bank of the ditch.

A passing driver paced near the rear bumper of his car, clutching his mobile phone to his ear while watching traffic pass.

Every few seconds, the animal let out a low breath, unable to gain purchase with its hooves against the slick, muddy walls.

Emergency Responders Arrive

A large rescue truck pulled in behind the parked car, its red warning beacons slicing through the gray mist.

A technician in a red jacket stepped directly into the deep muck, sliding his boots into the mud alongside the animal.

He sank to his knees in the sludge and rested his gloved hand over the horse’s dark forehead, stroking downward toward its nose.

The horse closed its eyes and relaxed its neck against the embankment as more crew members unloaded heavy gear from the transport trailer.

They unrolled thick black protective mats and guided wide industrial webbing beneath the animal’s massive torso and hindquarters.

The Coordinated Lift

Working in tight coordination, the rescue crew attached the support slings to the overhead crane arm mounted on their service truck.

Four crew members gripped the stabilizer ropes from the bank, leaning back against the mud to hold the tension steady.

As the hydraulic winch engaged, the blue straps tightened, slowly lifting the massive body up and out of the suctioning mud trench.

The technicians guided the horse’s legs clear of the trench edges, keeping the animal balanced until its hooves touched level ground.

Once on solid turf, the crew carefully unclipped the heavy harness and pulled the webbing away from its flanks.

Washing Away the Muck

The dark horse stood firmly on all four legs beside the transport trailer, blinking as its breathing slowed.

Two responders uncoiled a high-pressure water hose from the truck and began spraying the thick, dried mud from its chest and legs.

Streams of dark runoff cascaded down its glossy black coat, pooling into the grass beneath its hooves.

With the animal standing calm and steady, the crew rolled the hose back into the side compartment of the rescue rig under the afternoon sky.
