A Cold Request at the Glass
An elderly man in a worn brown coat folded his trembling hands together as he stood outside the bakery window.
Behind the clean glass display, rows of fresh sourdough and golden loaves rested on wooden shelves, steam still rising into the air.
The old man pressed his palms together near his chest, looking directly at the baker inside.
“Could you please give me one piece of bread?” his voice rasped softly. “I haven’t eaten today.”
Inside the warm kitchen, the baker dusted flour from his hands onto his dark apron and picked up a wooden tray.
He glanced up at the man standing in the chill air and shook his head.
“I’m sorry, I can’t give away the bread,” the baker replied, his face remaining firm as he turned back toward his counter.
The old man lowered his head, pulled his frayed coat tighter around his neck, and slowly shuffled down the brick sidewalk.
A Mark Left on the Pavement
The baker leaned out through the open service window to watch the stranger walk away.
As his eyes dropped toward the walkway, he stopped.
Pressed directly onto the stone pavement was a distinct footprint outlined in white flour and glowing faintly under the morning light.
The baker rested both hands on the wooden window ledge, staring down at the ground where the man had been standing moments before.
A short distance away, the older man sat down on a dark wooden bench along the street.
His coat was tidier now, a dark scarf wrapped around his neck as he held a small, black-and-white photograph between his fingertips.
He turned the photo over in his hands, staring closely at the faded image of two people.
The Story Behind the Photograph
Footsteps echoed on the sidewalk as the baker walked over from the storefront, still dressed in his clean white chef coat and apron.
He stopped beside the bench and pointed down at the picture in the man’s hands.
“Sir, who is in that picture?” the baker asked.
The old man looked up slowly, his thumb resting gently on the corner of the photograph.
“My son,” he answered.
“Where is he?” the baker asked, taking a small step closer.
“He works far away,” the man said, looking back down at the image. “Every day I wait here because this bakery is the last place he promised to meet me.”
He held the photo still in his lap, looking across the street toward the storefront while the baker stood beside him in silence.
An Unexpected Reunion
Inside the cozy dining area of the bakery, the old man sat at a small wooden table, his hands resting flat against the surface.
He wore a light jacket with small tears along the shoulder seams, his gray hair neatly brushed back as he kept his gaze fixed on the table.
Behind him, a young man in a dark jacket walked through the doorway, stopping a few feet away.
His eyes widened as he stepped toward the table.
“Dad, I’m sorry I’m late,” the young man said, his voice cracking slightly.
The old man turned his head quickly, a wide smile spreading across his face as his eyes creased at the corners.
“I knew you’d come,” he whispered.
The young man leaned down and wrapped both arms around his father’s shoulders, burying his face into his coat while the father patted his arm gently.
The baker stepped out from the kitchen carrying two wide white plates filled with warm meat and vegetables.
He walked over to the table with a smile, setting both plates down carefully in front of the father and son.
