A Request on the Sidewalk
An elderly man sat slumped against a red brick wall outside a bakery, his weathered hands resting across his knees.
His frayed brown coat showed tears at the shoulders, and his silver hair flared outward in uncombed tufts against the brickwork.
Shoppers stepped past the bakery display window, carrying paper bags filled with pastries without looking down at the pavement.
A younger man wearing a dark olive jacket paused a few feet away, noticing the man sitting alone on the cold sidewalk.
The older man lifted his chin slightly, looking up into the younger man’s face with wide eyes.
“Could you give me one small piece of bread?” he asked, his voice raspy and quiet.
An Unseen Discovery
The younger man reached down toward his bag and brought out a small, warm baguette loaf.
He leaned forward, extending his arm so the elderly man could take the bread firmly into his fingers.
“Of course, sir,” the younger man replied, lowering himself closer to the pavement.
The older man held the warm crust with both hands, bringing it toward his lips for a small bite.
As he chewed, his facial muscles relaxed, and a wide smile spread across his weather-beaten face.
He lowered the loaf slightly, turned his right wrist upward, and slowly uncurled his calloused fingers.
Resting in the middle of his palm sat a small metallic ring that caught the light overhead.
A Memory Kept Alive
Inside a quiet room, the two men sat side by side at a heavy wooden dining table.
The younger man picked up a small, yellowed birthday card that lay open between them on the surface.
He pointed his thumb toward the handwritten lettering across the front of the paper.
“Is today your birthday?” the younger man asked softly.
The older man shook his head, keeping his eyes locked on the paper in front of him.
“No, it’s my wife’s,” he answered, his thumb tracing the worn edge of the card.
The younger man tilted his head closer, studying the old man’s face.
“Where is she?” he asked.
The old man drew a slow breath, his shoulders dropping a fraction of an inch.
“She passed away years ago,” he said, clutching the paper gently. “I still remember her.”
He stood up and walked over to a nearby window, holding the card flat against his grey cardigan while looking out through the glass.
A Shared Moment
The younger man stepped back into the room holding a small white ceramic plate.
He placed the plate gently onto the wooden table directly in front of where the old man sat.
On top rested a miniature cake covered in white frosting, decorated with a bright red cherry right in the center.
“You may not be able to celebrate with her, but you can still remember her with a smile,” the younger man said.
The old man looked down at the table, his eyebrows lifting in surprise.
A broad smile broke across his face, tears forming at the corners of his eyes.
“Today, you’ve made an old man’s heart happy,” he said, his voice trembling slightly.
The younger man reached out and rested his right hand gently on the older man’s shoulder while the old man smiled down at the cherry atop the cake.
