Guard Blocks Dressed-Down Woman From Scanning Her Building Keycard

  • 3 min read

A Sudden Block At The Elevator Doors

An elderly woman walked across the polished marble lobby, holding a worn folder against her coat. The silver elevator doors slid open in front of her.

Before her foot could touch the elevator threshold, a tall security guard in a dark tailored suit stepped across her path. His broad shoulders blocked the opening completely.

He looked down at her scuffed brown shoes and the frayed edges of her jacket. “Stop,” he said. “Where are you going?”

“Going upstairs,” she replied calmly, her fingers tightening around the edge of her cardboard folder.

“Not through this elevator,” the guard replied, raising an index finger to point back toward the lobby entrance.

The Blocked Keycard

The woman reached into her pocket, drew out a white plastic access badge, and extended her arm toward the wall. “Let me scan it,” she said.

As she leaned toward the electronic scanner beside the elevator frame, the guard slammed his palm directly over the sensor panel. His brow furrowed and his teeth clenched. “Don’t touch the reader!” he barked.

The woman pulled her hand back, her eyes wide as she gripped the white card between two fingers. “That card answers the question,” she said evenly.

“One more move and you’re outside,” the guard warned, stepping closer until only inches separated his polished black leather shoes from her worn footwear.

“Call whoever runs this building,” she replied without lowering her gaze.

Answering The Radio Call

The guard unclipped a two-way radio from the shoulder strap of his suit jacket and held it to his lips. “Fine,” he muttered. He pressed the talk switch. “Building director to the lobby.”

A chime echoed softly across the wide floor as the woman pulled a slim mobile phone from her pocket and pressed it to her ear. “Building director speaking,” she said into the receiver.

The guard lowered the radio to his chest. His mouth fell slightly open, and his eyes shifted between the woman and the phone in her hand. “You’re the director?” he asked, his voice dropping.

“That’s who you just called,” she said, lowering her phone and tucking it into her purse.

The guard shifted his weight from one foot to the other. “Ma’am, I should have scanned the card…” he began, his voice faltering.

“You covered the scanner with your hand,” she interrupted, pointing a firm index finger directly toward the exit corridor. “Leave this post. I’m reviewing what happened.”

“Can I explain?” the guard asked, his hands dropping to his sides.

“You can explain it in writing,” she said. The guard turned on his heel and walked down the wide hallway as the metal elevator doors slid shut behind her.
