An Uninvited Gesture
A blonde woman in a gold satin dress reached out and placed her hand directly against Everett’s dark suit jacket.
She leaned closer to him on the stone terrace of the illuminated vineyard, glancing across the crowded evening party before asking if his wife was nearby.
Everett stood still, holding a glass of white wine in one hand, his jaw setting as he confirmed that his wife was indeed present.
The woman tilted her head, resting her fingers against his chest while suggesting that his wife was remarkably brave for leaving him unattended.
Before Everett could move away, an older woman in an elegant dark green gown and cream shawl stepped up beside them.
A Direct Confrontation
Helen introduced herself quietly as Everett’s wife, her arms folded neatly over her clutch.
The younger woman barely turned her head, replying that Everett had already mentioned her.
When Helen suggested that they understood one another, the guest tapped her fingers against her phone screen and stated that she preferred a challenge.
She turned her back slightly toward Helen, pointing to her screen and inviting Everett up the hill for an exclusive wine tasting.
Everett kept his body angled firmly toward his wife, explaining that he and Helen had arrived together.
The woman dismissed the mention, clarifying that she had not extended an invitation to Helen.
When she pressed her hand deeper into his jacket and told him he was more interesting when he stopped playing it safe, Everett looked down at her hand.
His voice remained low and steady as he told her to remove her hand from his suit.
She laughed off his instruction, asserting that Helen was holding him back and making him smaller.
Without raising her voice or arguing, Helen turned on her heel and walked calmly toward the interior building.
Uncovering The Past
The young woman smirked, claiming Helen had finally gotten the message and left.
Everett set his posture straight, correcting her by stating his wife had simply grown tired of listening to her chatter.
He turned his back on the outdoor party and walked straight inside, following his wife into the estate gallery.
Inside the dimly lit hallway, framed historical photos lined the mahogany walls under brass picture lights.
An older gentleman greeted Helen, resting a hand on her shoulder and pointing toward a dark framed print hanging prominently near a wooden display plaque.
The plaque read that the estate was founded by Everett and Helen Langley, built side by side.
The friend reminded Helen that he had kept their original first-harvest photograph right where she had placed it decades ago.
The younger woman, having followed them inside, stared at the wall where pictures showed two young founders working the dirt long before the luxury estate existed.
She asked Helen if she had actually helped plant the vines, admitting she believed Everett had built the entire property alone.
Helen looked at the historical images and quietly explained that they had cleared the land and planted the first vines together.
The Real Foundation
The visitor looked toward Everett, commenting that she assumed he had been the one carrying Helen through the years.
Everett stepped beside Helen, taking her hand into both of his.
He looked directly at his wife and stated that there were many lean years where Helen was the one carrying him.
The intruder took a half-step backward, her hand dropping to her side as she looked from the photo wall back to the couple.
Everett led Helen back out onto the patio, ignoring the guest completely as the band played soft music near the string lights.
He looked down into Helen’s eyes and recalled their very first harvest dance years ago when she had stepped on both of his shoes.
Helen smiled up at him, reminding him that he had asked her to dance again the following year anyway.
Everett tightened his grip gently on her hand, softly telling her that he was asking her to dance again right now, while the guest quietly walked off into the background shadows.
