A Routine Foot Patrol In The Suburbs
Two police officers walked shoulder to shoulder along a quiet residential sidewalk under the afternoon sun.
A large African grey parrot sat perched squarely on top of a weathered wooden fence post just ahead of their path.
Its bright orange tail feathers caught the daylight as its sharp dark eyes tracked the approaching dark uniforms.
The male officer slowed his stride, a broad grin spreading across his face as he stopped directly in front of the bird.
He gestured with an open palm, leaning slightly forward over the wooden pickets toward the bird.
“Hey buddy, can I see your ID?” the officer asked with a wide smile.
The Feathery Citizen Speaks Up
The grey bird tilted its head sharply to one side, blinking its round yellow-rimed eye at the badge pinned to the officer’s chest.
It shifted its black talons against the rough grain of the wooden post and opened its curved beak.
“ID? I’m a bird, genius,” the parrot rasped with crisp, clear pronunciation.
The female officer stopped mid-step, her eyes widening as her mouth dropped open.
The male officer threw his head back, his shoulders shaking with a sudden burst of laughter that echoed down the quiet street.
He adjusted the equipment on his belt and leaned in closer across the wooden barrier to continue the unexpected conversation.
“Okay, smart bird,” he said, nodding toward the feathered local. “Where do you live?”
The parrot ruffled the grey scalloped feathers across its neck, lifting its chin slightly before delivering its next reply.
“At my owner’s house, rent-free!” the bird squawked proudly.
Demanding Full Service From The Law
Both officers erupted into full belly laughs, bending at the waist as the neighborhood sat quietly around them.
The male officer rested his hands on the fence rail, shaking his head while wiping a corner of his eye.
“Do you have anything else to say?” the officer asked, waiting for the bird’s next move.
The parrot turned its head straight toward the two uniforms, standing tall on its wooden perch.
“Yes,” the bird answered without pause. “You guys are blocking my sunshine!”
The female officer let out a sharp gasp, raising her eyebrows high while her partner took a dramatic half-step backward onto the pavement.
Both officers cleared the pathway of light, letting the direct beam of sunlight illuminate the top of the fence post once again.
The parrot smoothed its wings against its sides and leaned forward into the warmth.
“Finally, professional service,” the parrot announced with a curt nod.
The two officers stood side by side on the concrete walkway, laughing aloud as the grey bird basked under the open sky.
