A Signal Beside The Road
The golden retriever planted both front paws firmly against the officer’s neon yellow vest and lifted his muzzle toward the roadway.
His handler lay flat on his back in the tall roadside grass, arms fallen limp at his sides and his peaked cap resting upside down near his head. Black and dark grey cars sped past on the narrow asphalt lane without slowing down.
The dog shifted his weight, pressing down into the fabric of the uniform, barking repeatedly at every vehicle that whizzed by.
Stopping To Make The Call
A silver hatchback slowed down along the shoulder, its tires crunching into the gravel before coming to a complete stop. The driver pushed her door open and stepped out onto the grass.
She dropped to one knee beside the fallen officer, resting one hand against his shoulder while checking his neck for a pulse. The retriever lowered his head, pressing his nose close to his partner’s cheek as the woman gently shook the officer’s arm.
She reached into her pocket, tapped numbers into her phone, and pressed the device against her ear. Her eyebrows pulled together as she spoke into the receiver, pointing back toward the silver car to give their exact location on the rural road.
Through The Emergency Doors
Flashing blue lights reflected across the trees as a yellow emergency vehicle pulled up along the grass verge. Paramedics slid a wheeled stretcher out from the rear doors, adjusting the safety straps across the officer’s chest and legs.
The dog trotted right beside the metal frame, keeping his nose within inches of the stretcher wheels as the crew guided the gurney up the rear ramp. When the team wheeled the bed through the hospital’s trauma bay doors, the woman and the dog remained step-for-step with the medical staff along the marked floor lines.
Inside the recovery ward, the officer rested under white hospital blankets with monitoring cables attached to his chest. On the other side of the partition window, the retriever sat with his chin resting near the glass, watching the rhythmic rise and fall of his handler’s chest while the woman held both hands pressed together in front of her.
Reunited At The Precinct
Color returned to the officer’s face as his eyes opened and he pushed himself up against the pillows. His colleagues gathered around the mattress, and the retriever placed his head squarely onto the officer’s chest, allowing the man to wrap both arms around his neck in a long embrace.
The officer picked up a fork from his bedside tray, sharing his recovery meal while the dog happily emptied a bowl set on the floor beside the nightstand.
Later at the station desk, the officer stood in full uniform, grasping the woman’s hand across the counter to thank her while the dog sat patiently on the tile floor. Outside on the precinct lawn in front of the squad car, the officer dropped onto one knee on the grass, laughing out loud as he tugged his checkered cap back and forth with the golden retriever before clapping his hands together.
Send this to someone who knows the unmatched loyalty of a devoted dog.
