Protective Parent Ducks Block Jogging Path As Man Steps Closer

  • 3 min read

A Fierce Defense on the Pavement

The male wood duck lowered his iridescent head, flapped his wings against the asphalt, and lunged straight at the walker’s gray sneakers.

Joggers continued their steady pace along the tree-lined lake path in the background, unaware of the small drama unfolding near the water’s edge.

On the ground between the man’s feet lay a tiny duckling, sitting flat against the rough gray surface and struggling to stand.

Beside the chick stood two adult wood ducks, their feathers sleek and vibrant against the bright daylight.

Every time the man took half a step forward, the colorful drake charged again, snapping his bill open and letting out sharp, rapid calls.

The female duck paced close behind him, turning her body back and forth to shield the resting baby.

An Unexpected Clue on the Ground

The man paused mid-stride, lifting both hands out to his sides with open palms.

He lowered his center of gravity, bending his knees until he rested on his heels just inches from the birds.

The drake retreated only slightly, keeping his body pinned between the man and the grounded chick.

From this lower angle, the reason for the duckling’s stillness became immediately clear.

A thick black rubber hair tie was looped tightly around the young bird’s body, trapping its small wing and pinning its leg against its side.

The duckling tilted its head up toward the crouching man, peeping softly while trying to kick its free leg.

The adult pair stood ground, watching every movement of the man’s fingers as he reached slowly toward the ground.

Gentle Hands at Work

The man slid both hands underneath the duckling, scooping its tiny down-covered body into his palms.

Instead of fleeing, the adult pair stepped closer, standing right at his knees with their necks stretched tall.

They opened and closed their beaks in rapid succession, voicing quiet squawks while keeping their eyes locked onto the man’s hands.

With careful, deliberate motions, he used his index finger to hook the edge of the elastic band.

He stretched the black band outward, easing it millimeter by millimeter over the small bird’s trapped wing joint.

The duckling remained steady in his grip, resting against his fingers as the tension on its feathers loosened.

With a final gentle tug, the tight band slipped free from the bird’s flank and into the man’s palm.

Returning to the Water

The man opened his hands flat against the paved path, resting the duckling safely back on its feet.

The tiny chick took two quick steps, stretching both wings out wide and shaking its tail feathers.

Both adult ducks immediately closed in around the little one, nudging it with their bills while chattering in low tones.

The man stood up slowly, stepping back to give the family room along the path.

Together, the trio turned toward the lake shore, waddling side by side over the green grass at the water’s edge.

The male led the way into the rippling shallows, followed by the female and the duckling paddling smoothly behind him into the open water.
