A Sharp Turn in the Hallway
The young man extended his index finger, pointing directly toward the elevator doors as his voice rose in the polished hallway. He adjusted his dark gray blazer and stepped into the woman’s path, cutting off her forward stride.
She stood her ground in a navy coat, holding a leather handbag and a stack of papers against her chest. When she quietly stated that she had a reason to be there, his jaw tightened.
He reached out, grabbed the folder from her hands, and yanked it sideways. White sheets fluttered through the air and scattered across the dark marble floor.
An Unexpected Interruption
Before the last page touched the stone tiles, a glass door swung open down the corridor. A silver-haired man in a navy suit stepped into the hallway, his eyebrows drawn together as he looked down at the mess on the floor.
The candidate straightened his posture and took a step back, smoothing his tie as the older executive approached the scene. The executive looked past the young man entirely, walking directly up to the woman.
He extended both hands, taking hers gently between his palms. He nodded his head slightly and spoke her name aloud, addressing her directly as Mrs. Carter.
A Revealing Shift
The executive turned back toward the applicant, motioning toward the woman who was still adjusting her coat. He explained that she was not a visitor waiting for assistance, but the chairwoman who owned the entire firm.
The candidate’s eyes widened. His lips parted, but no words came out as his hands dropped limply to his sides.
The chairwoman took a step forward, looking directly into his face. She explained that she had arrived ahead of schedule specifically to observe how applicants interact with others when they assume no one of status is present.
She turned on her heel and walked through the open doorway into the executive boardroom, leaving the candidate standing alone beside the scattered documents on the floor.
