A Delicate Strike Against The Ice
The steel head of a claw hammer lightly tapped against the thick, clear shell encasing the small gray bird.
Sub-zero winter air gripped the snow-covered backyard deck, where mounds of fresh powder buried the wooden railings and garden bushes.
Perched motionlessly along the top rail, the yellow-crested cockatiel sat trapped beneath a rigid dome of solid ice that locked its wings to its sides.
A thick winter glove wrapped gently around the base of the bird’s frozen body to keep it steady on the icy wood.
With calculated precision, the rescuer tapped the side of the hammer against the brittle crust, listening for the soft fracture lines spreading through the frozen casing.
Each tiny tap echoed across the silent, snow-draped yard as the ice began to split along the cockatiel’s crown.
The bird remained completely calm under the gloved hand, keeping its dark eyes fixed forward while the tool worked around its delicate beak.
Peeling Away The Frozen Shell
The rescuer set the hammer aside into the deep snow atop the railing.
Bringing both gloved hands up to the bird’s head, the rescuer pressed their thumbs directly into the seam where the ice had fractured.
The rigid shell gave way with a sharp crack, separating into two distinct halves along the curve of the bird’s neck.
Careful fingers gripped the front piece of ice, easing it away from the cockatiel’s yellow face and bright orange cheek patch.
Next came the rear section, which clung to the long gray feathers of the back and the tall crest feathers on top of the bird’s head.
With a slow, upward motion, the rescuer lifted the entire curved sheet of ice away from the bird’s body, letting the frozen chunks drop onto the snowbank.
The cockatiel stood unhindered on its pink feet, clear of the icy cage that had pinned its wings.
A Warm Touch In The Cold
Free from the frozen mold, the bird immediately puffed its gray and white feathers out to trap heat against its body.
It ruffled its entire frame from head to tail in a rapid shake, spraying tiny droplets of melted ice into the crisp air.
A high-pitched, sharp chirp cut through the quiet backyard, followed by a slight tilt of the cockatiel’s head.
The rescuer extended an open glove toward the bird, extending an index finger across the top of the snow.
Instead of retreating, the cockatiel stepped forward on the snowy rail and pressed its yellow crown directly against the worn fabric of the glove.
The rescuer stroked the soft feathers behind the bird’s crest, moving slowly down the nape of its neck.
The bird leaned into every stroke, lowering its head and letting out a sequence of soft whistles while resting safely against the warm leather glove.
