A Roadblock on the Paved Trail
A fluffy yellow gosling lay stretched out flat on the grey asphalt, unable to lift its chest off the ground.
Standing directly over the little bird, an adult Canada goose thrust its neck forward, flaring its enormous brown wings and hissing at anyone who dared to step close.
A runner wearing a red baseball cap slowed his pace and stopped a few feet away, holding both palms up to show empty hands.
Every time he leaned forward, the mother goose lunged, snapping her dark beak inches from his shins to drive him back onto the grass.
He stepped backward into the open path, lowering his voice into a quiet, rhythmic hum while keeping his gaze locked on the small bundle of down feathers.
Gaining Trust Step by Step
The man crouched low to the asphalt, reducing his height until he was eye-level with the protective parent.
He shuffled forward on his heels, moving one inch at a time while speaking softly toward the bird.
The adult goose extended her long black neck, issuing a low rasp, but she did not strike as his fingers hovered near the pavement.
He lowered both palms gently to the ground on either side of the gosling, letting the baby rest against his fingertips.
The gosling let out a tiny peep, struggling to tuck its webbed feet underneath its body but failing to gain any traction.
Looking closely between the soft yellow down, the man spotted bright yellow elastic bands tightly coiled around the baby’s neck and legs, pinning its limbs against its torso.
Carefully Cutting the Bonds
Working with the tips of his fingers, he slipped a thumbnail beneath the first taut band of rubber cutting into the gosling’s downy chest.
The mother stood entirely still just inches away, watching his knuckles work beneath her baby’s chin.
He gently stretched the elastic loop upward, guiding it over the baby’s beak and tiny head without pulling on the delicate skin.
A second band was twisted around the legs, locking the joints into a stiff, awkward bend against the pavement.
He pinched the band, stretched the rubber outward, and slid it free from the ankle joint, dropping the discarded loop onto the asphalt.
As the tension vanished, the gosling blinked and pushed its small feet down against the ground.
A Safe Walk Back to the Water
The young bird popped upright onto two sturdy feet, giving its small tail a quick shake before scurrying directly toward the mother goose.
The mother leaned down, touching her bill to the gosling’s back before turning toward the green bank of the lake.
Together, the two birds waddled through the tall grass, stepping down over the muddy bank and gliding out into the clear water side by side.
Back on the path, the man dropped to his knees, gathering dozens of loose yellow rubber bands scattered across the pavement into his cupped palm.
