Officer Confronts An Elderly Man Riding With His Pack Of Dogs

  • 3 min read

Flashing Lights on a Quiet Street

An elderly man steered his rusted motorized tricycle along the asphalt, pressing a small puppy tightly against the worn fabric of his brown jacket.

In the sidecar beside him, another dog sat upright, its ears pinned back against the breeze as the engine rattled loudly down the residential road.

Behind the three-wheeler, red and blue lights began flashing through the rear windshield of a patrol cruiser.

The officer inside called through the loudspeaker, directing the driver to bring the vehicle to an immediate halt along the curb.

The older man swung his leg over the seat, his boots hitting the pavement as he kept both arms wrapped securely around the young pup.

A pack of stray dogs trotted up from the grass, circling around the metal wheels and sniffing at the front basket.

An Unexpected Order

The uniformed officer stepped out of the cruiser, walking slowly toward the curb with his hands resting near his belt.

The older man leaned slightly away from the officer, his fingers tightening around the puppy’s ribs while the other dogs pressed close against his shins.

The officer took hold of the handlebars, swung his leg over the frame, and started the small engine.

He told the man to wait by the curb, promising he would return shortly before rolling away down the street.

The man watched the vehicle disappear around the corner, his shoulders sagging toward the ground as the engine noise faded.

He pulled the puppy closer beneath his chin, glancing down at the four dogs sitting in a tight circle around his dusty boots.

He murmured aloud, wondering what they would do if their only mode of transport and shelter never returned.

A Delivery at the Curb

Minutes ticked by while the man paced back and forth across the narrow strip of lawn between the sidewalk and the road.

The dogs kept their heads turned in the direction the tricycle had gone, their tails still and their ears perked toward every passing engine.

A bright orange pickup truck turned the corner, rolling slowly toward the curb where the man stood waiting.

Balloons in shades of red, yellow, and blue bobbed from the side mirrors and bed rails in the afternoon sun.

Stretched across the front bumper was a hand-painted banner displaying bold blue and red lettering that read, ‘SURPRISE HOME!’

The driver’s door swung wide, and the same police officer stepped onto the asphalt with a broad smile across his face.

He walked directly up to the older man and held out an open palm containing a set of shiny brass keys.

Resting in the Sun

The older man stared down at the metal key ring, his mouth parting slightly before he reached out to clasp the officer’s hand.

He wrapped both arms around the officer’s shoulders, burying his face into the dark blue uniform fabric as tears ran down his cheeks.

The officer returned the embrace, patting the man’s back before helping him step around toward the open tailgate.

In the bed of the orange truck, thick quilted blankets and plush pillows were neatly arranged across the metal floor.

The dogs scrambled up into the back, circling around the soft fabric before collapsing side by side against each other.

The small puppy nestled its muzzle into the folds of a fleece blanket, closing its eyes under the warm evening sun while the man sat beside his companions with his arm resting over the officer’s shoulder.
