Trapped Young Fox Struggles Along Fence Before Someone Steps In

  • 2 min read

A Struggle in the Tall Grass

The young red fox kicked its hind legs into the dirt, clawing at the clear plastic jug wedged over its skull.

Its front paws scraped repeatedly against the slick plastic edge. Every attempt to pull backward only wedged the narrow container tighter against its neck.

The animal stumbled sideways across the weeds along the wooden fence. It rose to its feet, lowered its chin, and bumped blindly into tall thistle stalks.

A woman walking along the pasture perimeter stopped abruptly when she saw the sudden thrashing near the lower rail. She set her wooden basket down in the grass and knelt a few feet away.

Careful Hands and a Heavy Blanket

The fox collapsed onto its belly against the clover, its ribs heaving rapidly inside its orange coat.

She pulled heavy leather work gloves over her hands and unfolded a soft fleece blanket. Moving slowly, she draped the fabric across the animal’s back and hindquarters to keep its claws contained.

She placed one gloved palm flat against the fox’s shoulders, pinning it firmly against the ground. Her other hand gripped the smooth base of the clear jug.

The fox stiffened, its tail curling tight against its flank. She angled the plastic opening carefully, working the rim past the animal’s pointed ears millimeter by millimeter.

The Final Pull

With a firm, steady tug, the plastic cylinder slid completely free from the fox’s head.

The fox blinked in the open air, shaking its whiskers and flattening its ears back against its neck. It did not bolt, remaining crouched beneath the warmth of the blanket.

The woman uncapped a clear water bottle and poured fresh water into a low metal dish resting on the grass. She nudged the bowl closer to the animal’s muzzle.

The fox lowered its snout and lapped from the surface, drinking steadily while the woman kept her gloved hand resting lightly on its spine.

A Look Back Across the Meadow

After finishing the water, the fox stood up and shook its entire coat from head to tail.

It walked several paces into the open green field, its bushy tail brushing against the tops of the weeds. The woman stood by the wooden fence line with the empty jug in her hand.

The fox paused near the crest of the path, turned its head back toward the fence, and stared directly across the grass before moving into the evening light.
