A Sudden Fall on the Sidewalk
The officer’s palm slapped flat against the gray pavement as his knees buckled beside the wooden bench.
His shoulder scraped the edge of the slats before he slid entirely to the ground, pressing one hand hard against his ribs.
Standing right beside him, the German shepherd snapped his head down, nudging his partner’s shoulder with the tip of his wet nose.
The dog let out a sharp bark, shifting his weight rapidly from front paw to back paw.
When the officer failed to push himself back up, the K9 spun around toward the neighborhood walkway.
Finding a Stranger on the Path
Further down the concrete path, an elderly woman in a blue cardigan stopped walking as the dog approached her.
The German shepherd planted all four paws firmly on the sidewalk, looking directly into her face while barking twice.
Her hands flew to her chest, her mouth parting as she took a quick step back.
The dog turned his body sideways, took three steps toward the bench, and looked back over his shoulder to see if she followed.
Recognizing the animal’s movement, she picked up her pace and hurried down the tree-lined sidewalk behind him.
She dropped to one knee beside the fallen officer, pulling a small silver phone from her pocket and pressing it to her ear.
As she spoke into the receiver, her free hand rested on the officer’s shoulder while the dog pressed his flank tightly against his handler’s side.
Waiting for the Medical Team
Automatic glass doors slid open at the emergency entrance as three medical workers rolled a yellow-framed stretcher forward.
The officer lay back under a gray blanket, his fingers reaching out to lightly graze the dog’s dark fur alongside the rolling wheels.
Inside the bright waiting room, the woman sat upright on a padded vinyl bench with her hands folded neatly in her lap.
The German shepherd sat tall on the tile floor next to her knees, his pointed ears swiveling toward every passing footstep.
A man in dark blue scrubs eventually stepped through the doorway, caught the woman’s eye, and lifted a single thumb into the air with a nod.
A Reunion on the Pavement
Back outside near the brick entrance of the building, the officer dropped onto one knee on the sunny asphalt.
The dog lunged forward, throwing both front paws onto the officer’s bulletproof vest and burying his snout into the man’s neck.
The officer wrapped both arms around the shepherd’s muscular torso, burying his face in the thick fur as the dog’s tail beat against the pavement.
Standing a step away, the elderly woman clasped both hands under her chin, smiling down as the officer reached out a hand to thank her.
