Stranded Along the Highway Wire
A golden retriever mother stretched her front paws against a wire fence, barking toward the red netting suspended high above her.
Cars sped past on the open road just yards away, sending bursts of air rustling through the dry grass along the dirt shoulder.
Tangled high inside the red mesh grid fastened to the top of the chain-link barrier, two golden retriever puppies squirmed in place, suspended mid-air.
On the ground below, two other small puppies huddled against the fence posts, watching their siblings sway above them.
The mother dog paced back and forth along the dusty dirt path, her tail low and her ears pulled back as she let out frequent, high-pitched barks.
She repeatedly reached up toward the netting with her nose, but the structure hung out of her physical reach.
A Man Arrives With Tools
A man wearing a heavy grey jacket and protective gloves walked into the frame holding a pair of heavy-duty metal wire cutters.
As he approached the barrier, the mother dog immediately turned toward him and raised both her front paws onto the wire, nudging her nose against his sleeve.
The man positioned himself directly under the suspended mesh, reaching his arms upward to assess how the cord was woven through the chain-link frame.
He placed one gloved hand underneath the base of the mesh bag to support the weight of the puppies inside.
With his other hand, he aligned the sharp blades of the cutters with the thick strand holding the lower section of the netting together.
The mother retriever stayed anchored right at his side, her head tilted upward as the metal jaws clamped down on the mesh string.
Cutting Through the Grid
The steel blades sliced through the first thick cord, making a audible snap that loosened the bottom loop of the enclosure.
He systematically moved the snips along the netting weave, cutting strand after strand while holding the puppies steady from underneath.
As the mesh opened, the first puppy slid downward into the palm of his work glove.
He gently lowered his arm to ground level, placing the small retriever onto the gravel right in front of its mother.
The mother instantly leaned down, pressing her muzzle into the puppy’s fur and sweeping her tongue over its head and neck.
The man reached back up to cut the remaining threads, freeing the second puppy, which slid smoothly down into his open arms.
All four puppies gathered together around the man’s work boots, their tails wagging rapidly as they nuzzled against the mother dog’s legs.
Riding Safe at Dusk
With the entire family gathered on solid ground, the man picked up the puppies and led the mother away from the busy road to his parked car.
Inside the vehicle, he spread a thick, light-colored blanket across the front passenger seat and center console.
The mother dog sat up on the back cushion while her puppies nestled into the folds of the blanket beside the gear shift.
As the man drove down the road toward the setting sun, the mother golden retriever rested her chin softly on top of her puppies’ back while he kept one hand resting over them on the seat.
