Two Women Assist A Stranger Who Leaves An Inscribed Watch Behind

  • 4 min read

An Unexpected Offer at the Seaside Table

An elderly man in a worn brown suit coat stood beside a white dining table overlooking the ocean, extending a brass pocket watch in his right hand.

He adjusted the thin chain between his fingers and addressed the two women sitting across from empty wine glasses, asking if he could trade the watch for something to eat.

The younger woman in the blue floral dress leaned forward and gestured toward the empty wooden chair at their table.

She told him that he did not need to trade anything he owned and invited him to take a seat with them.

The mother seated beside her, wearing a cream wrap dress, nodded along and encouraged him to sit and eat first.

A Simple Basket of Bread and Milk

The man paused, looking down at the timepiece resting in his palm while explaining that he did not want to interrupt their dinner.

Before he could step away, the younger woman pushed back her chair and walked toward the serving counter.

She returned seconds later carrying a small woven basket filled with golden bread rolls alongside a tall glass of milk.

He took the basket into both hands, lowering himself onto the chair as the sun began to dip toward the water line.

He held the food close to his chest, looking directly at both women while speaking a quiet blessing for their help.

The mother told him to take his time eating and offered to get more food if he was still hungry when he finished.

After eating the roll, the man stood up from the table, smoothed down the front of his jacket, and walked away down the wooden boardwalk.

The Left-Behind Heirloom

As the elderly man walked toward the pier, the mother noticed the brass watch sitting on top of the clean white tablecloth.

She picked up a cloth napkin from her lap and gently wiped the glass face of the watch, examining the Roman numerals printed across the dial.

She showed the timepiece to her daughter, pointing out that someone had cared deeply for the object at one point in time.

A man dressed in a dark navy suit and white shirt walked up to the table holding two fresh green coconuts with straws sticking out.

He set the drinks down on the table and apologized for the long line he had faced while getting them.

The mother held up the pocket watch and explained that an older man had just left it on the table after eating some bread.

A Race Down the Wooden Pier

The man in the suit took the brass timepiece into his hands, his thumb pressing against the catch to open the back casing.

His hands began to shake as he read the engraving carved into the gold metal flap inside.

He looked at his family and explained that the watch belonged to his father, who had gone missing twelve years prior following a ocean fishing trip.

The daughter instantly turned toward the wooden railing of the pier, extending her arm and pointing down the boardwalk.

She told her family that the man who brought the watch had walked down that exact path only a minute earlier.

All three of them sprinted down the wooden deck, calling out into the evening wind as bystanders turned to watch.

They caught up to the elderly man standing by the railing, where the son reached out and held the open pocket watch directly before his father’s eyes against the setting sun.
