Dog Springs Into Action as Train Exits Tunnel Toward Stranded Hiker

  • 3 min read

Trapped Between Cold Steel Rails

The woman’s hand clamped onto the wooden railroad tie as she pulled her foot, but the heavy boot remained wedged tight beneath the iron rail.

A few yards ahead, two bright headlights pierced the black mouth of the mountain tunnel.

Beside her, her German Shepherd stood rigid, his red harness shifting slightly as he looked from the tunnel back down to her face.

She tugged her backpack closer to her chest, her knuckles turning white against the straps while she tried once more to wrench her leg free.

The steel rail beneath her leg began to emit a low, rhythmic vibration.

Her dog nudged her shoulder with his wet nose, let out a sharp bark, and spun around on the rough gravel bed.

Sprinting Along the Mountain Trail

His paws kicked up clouds of gray dust as he broke into a full gallop along the narrow dirt path running parallel to the tracks.

He navigated around pine trees and jagged boulders, his ears pinned back as his strides lengthened across the rocky earth.

A few hundred yards down the line, an emergency track worker in a bright orange reflective jacket and white hardhat was stepping out from a yellow maintenance vehicle.

The dog skidded to a halt in the loose stone directly in front of the man, barking insistently while darting two paces back toward the tracks.

The worker paused, gripped a red emergency medical bag in his left hand, and immediately followed the dog’s lead.

Together, they sprinted along the curve of the mountain trail, the dog glancing over his shoulder every few bounds to keep the worker close behind.

Clearing the Line in Time

As they rounded the bend by the roaring mountain river, the train’s horn echoed sharply against the granite cliffs.

The worker arrived at the tracks, dropping to his knees on the sharp stones next to the woman.

He unbuckled the trapped boot with steady, rapid movements, pulling her foot clear of the binding steel just as the ground began to tremble under the oncoming weight.

Taking her right arm over his shoulder, he hoisted her upright, and the two stumbled down the embankment away from the iron rails.

The dog darted closely behind them, herding them up the grassy slope toward safety as the locomotive rolled past the exact spot where she had been pinned.

Resting on the Overlook

Once on the grassy crest above the valley, the worker unfolded a metallic thermal blanket and draped it around her shoulders.

He raised a black two-way radio to his mouth, speaking into the receiver while watching the train continue down the line.

The woman pulled the silver foil tightly around herself, sank onto the mountain grass, and buried her face into the thick fur of her German Shepherd’s neck as he leaned his full weight against her side.
