A Crying Kitten On The Fence Line
The tiny gray kitten stretched its front paws upward, wedged tightly against the rough wooden fence plank as semi-trucks sped past just feet away.
Its mouth opened wide in a continuous series of high-pitched cries, its back legs scrambling against the loose gravel shoulder for traction.
A white pickup truck slowed down, pulled off the paved highway, and parked along the dry grass bordering the fence line.
The truck door clicked open, and an older man in a denim jacket stepped out onto the dirt shoulder.
He walked steadily toward the wooden post, his boots kicking up small puffs of roadside dust.
Careful Hands At Work
The kitten continued to wail, pressing its belly flat against the splintered wood as the man knelt down in the dirt.
He pulled a small metal tool from his pocket, careful not to make any sudden or jarring movements.
He slid the edge of the tool into the narrow gap between the wooden rails, wedging it directly above where the small paw was caught.
With slow, controlled pressure, he levered the weathered board upward just enough to loosen the clamp on the limb.
The kitten slipped its front leg free from the timber, dropping onto all four paws in the dry weeds.
The man rested one finger against the top of the kitten’s striped head, stroking down its back while the animal nudged into his palm.
An Unexpected Discovery In The Weeds
The freed kitten turned away from the highway and trotted straight through the lower fence gap into the tall sagebrush.
The man stood up, ducked under the fence post, and followed the kitten’s path through the dry field.
A few yards off the gravel road sat a closed cardboard box with ventilation holes punched along the sides.
The man knelt beside the box and gently lifted open the top cardboard flaps.
Inside the dark container, a cluster of tiny kittens huddled together, letting out faint, muffled squeaks from beneath the cardboard.
The little gray kitten leaped straight over the cardboard rim, tumbling in beside its siblings.
Heading Down The Open Road
The man reached into the box with both hands, lifting the small animals and transferring them securely into a sturdy pet carrier.
He carried the crate over to the tailgate of his truck and set it safely into the bed.
He climbed back behind the wheel, pulled the door shut, and turned onto the open gravel road.
The white truck kicked up a light dust trail as it moved toward the horizon, heading straight under the orange glow of the setting sun.
