The Daily Routine
An older man wearing a dark woolen coat set a brown paper bag down on the wooden slats of a park bench. He adjusted his collar, turned around, and walked along the leaf-strewn pavement without looking back.
A woman sitting a short distance away paused. She kept her hands inside the pockets of her green jacket and tracked his steps across the grass.
For weeks, she had observed the exact same sequence. Every afternoon, the man arrived with a freshly prepared meal, left it on the empty bench, and vanished down the street.
Following His Footsteps
The woman stood up from her seat and maintained a distant pace behind him. She watched his shoulders move as he crossed the street toward a row of brick townhouses.
He pulled out a set of keys near a front door marked with numbers, stepped inside, and closed the door behind him. She stood on the sidewalk across the street, looking at the quiet entrance.
The following day, she waited near the park bench before his arrival. As soon as his shoes hit the gravel path, she stepped into his line of sight.
Uncovering The Reason
The man placed the paper bag on the bench as usual. The woman walked up to him and gestured toward the warm container resting inside the open bag.
“Who are you leaving that food for?” she asked, her hands resting at her sides.
The man slowed his breath and looked down at the wooden bench. “Someone who used to sit here,” he said quietly.
The woman tilted her head, her gaze fixed on his face. He explained that three years prior, his daughter had passed away, and leaving the food at her favorite spot was how he honored her memory.
Passing It Along
As they spoke, a young man in a gray hooded sweatshirt approached the bench. He stopped a few feet away, eyeing the bag of food with hesitation.
The older man turned toward the newcomer and gestured to the container. “It’s yours,” he said.
The young man hesitated, asking why a stranger would offer him a warm meal. The older man smiled softly, explaining that someone had once extended that same help to his daughter.
The young man reached down, lifted the brown paper bag from the wooden bench, and held it close to his chest while the older man and woman watched him walk away.
