Trapped Along The Highway
Tiny paws scratched against the slick concrete as water rushed around the small pup’s legs.
A few feet above, an adult golden dog paced the narrow roadside ledge, craning her neck downward toward the ditch.
Cars sped past along the mountain highway, sending gusts of wind across the concrete edge as the mother dog barked repeatedly into the air.
The puppy leaped upward, digging his front claws into the rough vertical wall, only to slide back into the shallow stream below.
Every time the little dog lost his footing, the older dog shifted her weight, nudging her nose over the rim as if trying to reach him with her teeth.
A Rescuer Steps Into The Current
Heavy rubber boots entered the water with a steady splash.
A man dressed in a dark blue utility jumpsuit with reflective stripes waded along the narrow canal toward the struggling puppy.
The adult dog stepped back just inches from the edge, keeping her eyes locked on the worker’s hands as he crouched low.
The man scooped both hands beneath the drenched puppy’s chest and belly, lifting him out of the cold flow.
The puppy immediately stopped thrashing, his tail tucking inward as water dripped from his golden coat onto the rescuer’s gloves.
Reunited At The Ledge
Holding the puppy firmly against his chest, the rescuer stood up tall in the deep trench.
He raised the puppy above the concrete lip so the mother dog could reach him.
The adult dog stepped forward immediately, pressing her wet nose against the pup’s forehead and ears.
Her tongue swept across the puppy’s face while the man supported the small body with both hands against the concrete ledge.
Before setting the puppy down on solid pavement, the man leaned forward and pressed his cheek against the mother dog’s snout.
With a careful push, the man boosted the little dog over the crest, where four paws finally found dry ground.
Rest In The Mountain Meadow
Later that afternoon, two silver bowls rested side by side in a lush meadow filled with small white wildflowers.
The adult dog dipped her snout into the bowl of kibble, chewing steadily while the pup rested his chin on the soft green grass beside her.
After eating, the mother dog lowered her body onto the grass, curling her torso into a wide curve.
The puppy tucked his head beneath her chest, pulling his paws tight against her golden fur.
She tilted her head downward, running her tongue over his damp fur until his eyelids closed completely in the afternoon breeze.
