A Cold Welcome
An older man adjusted his weathered green shirt as he leaned over a sleek grey laptop on the glass display table. His white beard was neatly trimmed, but his faded denim pants and worn attire stood out against the bright, polished marble of the showroom floor. He tapped his fingers lightly on the metallic casing, evaluating the build quality.
A store manager in a tailored suit stepped into the aisle, crossing his arms over his chest. He looked the elderly customer up and down before speaking up. “That model is very expensive,” the manager said, keeping his voice dry as he stood a few feet back.
The older man turned his head slowly, looking at the manager through clear eyes. “I know,” he replied softly. “I just need something reliable.”
Stepping In To Assist
Before the manager could say anything more, a young female associate named Olivia stepped out from behind the service counter. She carried a sleek, silver notebook in her hands and approached the glass counter with a warm expression. She set the device down right beside the one the older customer was examining.
“Maybe this one would work better?” Olivia suggested, pointing out the smooth keyboard and slim profile. She leaned in closer to show him the specifications on the display screen.
The older man rested his palms on the edge of the table and looked at the screen. “Can it handle video editing?” he asked, glancing up at her.
Olivia smiled, nodding without delay. “Yes, it can.”
An Unexpected Order
The older man looked across the long display row, scanning the identical laptops aligned side by side. He tapped his finger against the edge of the nearest unit. “All three,” he said calmly.
Olivia stopped tapping on her tablet and looked up, her eyebrows lifting. “All three?” she asked, her voice rising slightly.
“All three,” the older man repeated with a light chuckle. He turned his head and pointed toward a wall display on the far side of the store. “And ten of those tablets.”
The store manager, who had been standing near the back wall watching the interaction, turned his head quickly. He took two fast steps forward, his eyes wide as he stared at the associate and the customer.
The older man reached into his front pocket, pulled out a dark phone, and opened a digital wallet application. He tapped the screen against the payment terminal sitting on the counter. A sharp notification tone rang across the counter as the green confirmation checkmark flashed on the phone screen.
The manager stared at the phone display, his mouth slightly open. “You’re buying all of this?” he asked.
“Yes,” the older man replied, holding his phone in both hands. “I have a team waiting.”
The True Identity Revealed
Quick footsteps echoed from the store entrance as a tall executive dressed in a sharp navy business suit hurried down the main aisle. He spotted the older man standing at the counter and immediately broke into a wide smile, picking up his pace.
“Mr. Henry!” the executive called out, reaching forward to clasp the older man’s hand with both of his own. “We’ve been waiting for you. Your company signed our largest partnership.”
The manager pulled his chin back, taking a small step back into the shadow of the pillar as his gaze moved from the executive to the older customer. His posture slouched, his hand dropping to his side.
Mr. Henry held the executive’s hand for a moment before turning his posture back toward Olivia. He pointed a thumb toward her as she stood behind the register. “She was the only one who cared to help,” Mr. Henry said, glancing back at the manager. “Never judge a customer by his clothes.”
The four of them stood together in the wide aisle of the tech store, surrounded by glowing display panels and polished glass as the sales transaction finished processing on the screen.
