Passing Taxi Driver Spots Distressed Dog Guarding Collapsed Cyclist

A Voice on the Sidewalk

The golden retriever planted both front paws onto the girl’s shoulder, throwing his head back to bark directly at oncoming traffic.

Beside them on the concrete, a bicycle lay on its side with a helmet resting against the front wheel. The young woman remained curled motionless on the pavement, her head resting on her backpack.

A passing black taxi pulled up to the curb. An older woman stepped out from the driver’s side and hurried toward the fallen rider, kneeling beside the dog who nudged his owner’s cheek.

Calling for Urgent Help

The woman rested one hand on the cyclist’s back while pulling a phone from her pocket with the other. She pressed the speaker to her ear, reporting the exact location while the dog sat watching every movement.

Red and blue lights soon reflected off the pavement as an ambulance pulled up beside the curb.

Two paramedics lowered a gurney to ground level and positioned it directly next to the fallen cyclist. Working together, they secured straps across the young woman and lifted the frame, rolling her straight through the rear doors while the older woman guided the retriever alongside by his leash.

Through the Emergency Doors

The gurney rolled quickly down the hospital corridor toward trauma bay one, accompanied by nurses in blue and green scrubs. The retriever trotted close to the wheels, keeping his eyes on the moving stretcher.

Outside the glass doors of the treatment room, the older woman sat on a chair with her hands clasped against her chin, whispering quietly while the dog sat patiently on the carpet beside her feet.

Through the partition, a nurse checked monitors and adjusted the IV line next to the resting patient.

Reunited by the Bedside

Propped up on pillows with clean sheets pulled over her lap, the young woman opened her eyes and smiled as the door swung open. The golden retriever stepped forward, resting his front paws directly onto the mattress to press his face into her chest.

She wrapped both arms tightly around his neck, resting her forehead against the thick fur along his collar.

A bedside tray held a small bowl of dry food, crackers, and a cup of water. As the older woman offered a piece of a biscuit, the dog accepted a bite before turning his nose back to his owner’s shoulder.

After returning home, the girl knelt on the brick patio behind her house, tugging playfully on a rope toy while the dog pulled back with a wagging tail.

Later that evening under a glowing bedside lamp, the girl slept beneath a quilt with her arm draped across the golden retriever curled on the mattress beside her.
