Rescuer Spots A Muddy Mother Cat Protecting Her Kittens

  • 3 min read

A Fragile Escape From Rising Water

A tiny tabby kitten dragged its dripping paws across a splintered board over standing murky water. Beside it on a narrow stone ledge, an orange mother cat stood watching her litter step toward the brown puddle.

Rain runoff filled the narrow corner behind the wooden fence, leaving only inches of dry ground. The ginger kitten meowed, lifting one wet foot as the water lapped against the stone border.

A man in a green waterproof coat knelt in the muck and reached down. Wearing thick work gloves, he scooped the tabby kitten from the edge of the puddle and set it gently inside an open pet carrier lined with a soft cloth.

He returned for the orange kitten and then reached toward the mother cat. She let out a brief cry before stepping into the carrier alongside her young.

The man latched the front gate, lifted the container by its top handle, and carried the family away from the waterlogged yard.

A Warm Bath And Clean Fur

Inside the bathroom, water ran into the white ceramic basin. The kittens stood along the rim on folded towels, watching the stream splash below.

The rescuer lowered the orange mother into the lukewarm water, wetting the leaves and debris stuck behind her ears. He massaged pet shampoo into her fur, lathering the mud away from her whiskers and neck.

One by one, the kittens took their turn in the shallow tub. The grey kitten patted at the running water with one paw as the man rinsed its soapy belly.

He wrapped each small body inside a thick white towel, patting them dry before picking up a soft bristle brush. The grey kitten tilted its head back with closed eyes as the brush smoothed down its damp fur.

The ginger kitten leaned in beside its sibling, purring against the bristles as their coats dried completely.

Rebuilding The Yard From The Ground Up

Back in the yard, the man hauled away sodden cardboard boxes and pulled tangled root balls from the mud. Water pooled in the trenches where the debris once sat.

He pushed a metal post digger deep into the earth to clear a path for drainage. After securing a perforated pipe along the trench, he poured buckets of coarse gravel around it to filter the runoff.

The tabby kitten scampered across the freshly laid stones, sniffing at the plastic pipe. The man raked the gravel flat before laying square slate paving stones across the entire ground surface.

He checked the pitch of each stone with a spirit level, tapping them into place with a rubber mallet. A clean line of decorative river rock filled the gaps between each paver to channel future rain.

A Safe Shelter In The Corner

With the ground secure and dry, the man began assembling thick lumber frames with a cordless driver. The orange mother cat sat nearby on a dry paver, watching the wood take shape.

He fastened outer tongue-and-groove boards onto the base, cutting a small arched entrance doorway on the side. Over the plywood roof, he stapled a waterproof barrier before nailing overlapping dark shingles from bottom to top.

He filled the interior floor with a thick layer of golden dry straw, placing stainless steel food and water dishes right outside the door.

The mother cat stepped through the doorway, turned three times, and settled onto the straw bedding. The three kittens bounded through the entrance, clambering over her legs before curling into a tight ball against her side, their eyes drifting shut as they rested together.
