A Sudden Demotion in the Suite
Chloe leaned in toward her father while holding a slim champagne flute, her jaw set firm as she gestured toward the back of the suite. She told Thomas Hale that her stepfather Richard would walk her down the aisle instead of him. Thomas stood in his gray charcoal suit, his hands resting by his side as he listened to his daughter explain that he belonged in the back rows where the wedding cameras would not pick him up.
He had already spent eighty thousand dollars covering every standard cost for the high-end ceremony in the downtown Chicago hotel. Yet his daughter adjusted her satin dress and insisted that Richard fit the country club image better with his tailored suit and gold watch. Richard smiled beside her, patting his own jacket and telling Thomas that he had already done his part by paying the bill.
Thomas kept his mouth closed and took a step back toward the center of the hotel suite.
The Unapproved Invoice
His phone vibrated in his jacket pocket a few moments after he left the bridal suite. The screen illuminated with an alert showing an unauthorized charge of eleven thousand eight hundred dollars for a premium wedding upgrade.
He walked straight down to the hotel lobby and laid out the vendor contracts on a small glass table across from the wedding planner. He flipped through the ring binder, pointing his index finger at line items for imported orchids, a champagne wall, designer furniture, and a midnight seafood bar. Unapproved upgrades totaling thirty-four thousand dollars had been added directly to his credit card account under his name.
The planner looked down at her folder and explained that Chloe had claimed Thomas would approve whatever additions she wanted. Thomas rested his hands flat on the open binder and told the planner to keep only the original items he had signed for. He instructed her to freeze every unauthorized charge immediately, stating clearly that his credit card was locked for any further expenses.
A Confrontation Over the Phone
A short time later, Thomas’s phone rang while he sat reviewing the printed invoices at his desk. Chloe’s voice came through the speaker as she demanded to know why the luxury additions were being cancelled right before the ceremony. Thomas held the phone quietly against his ear, explaining that he was paying for the exact package he had initially agreed to cover.
When Chloe demanded the full thirty-four thousand dollars or threatened that he should not attend the ceremony at all, Thomas simply replied that he would stay home. Richard grabbed the phone from Chloe, telling Thomas to stop playing games and claiming he would manage everything himself.
At the rehearsal dinner the following evening, Chloe stood up in her green dress and raised a glass to the room, announcing to the guests that her stepfather had saved the entire event.
The Table Set for Two
The wedding planner walked into the dining room a few minutes later and set a white paper invoice directly on the table in front of Richard. The gold watch on Richard’s wrist caught the light as his face shifted, his eyebrows drawing together as he stared at the total figure of thirty-four thousand dollars printed at the bottom.
Chloe leaned over toward Richard, expecting him to hand over his card to clear the balance right away. Richard lowered his voice, arguing that he had only promised to handle Thomas, not to cover thirty-four thousand dollars for imported flowers and specialized decor. He told her clearly that he was not an automated teller machine, leaving the extra upgrades completely unpaid.
The next afternoon, the doors to the grand ballroom opened wide for the processional. The room lacked the imported orchids and designer lounge setups, leaving basic arrangements along the carpeted aisle. Richard stood beside Chloe in his tuxedo, gripping her arm tightly as they walked forward past rows of seated guests who watched them in quiet observation.
