A Rainy Night Delivery
A young delivery driver stepped off the wet asphalt and walked toward the small front porch framed by a glowing yellow lantern.
Rain dripped from the hem of his dark jacket as he carried a small cardboard parcel up the three front steps.
Inside the house, an elderly man had been standing by the curtained window, watching the rain strike the glass.
He walked to the entrance and pulled the wooden front door open just as the driver reached the top step.
The older man wore a brown knitted cardigan over a collared shirt, his silver hair neatly combed back from his forehead.
He smiled warmly and took the package from the driver’s hands with both palms.
An Unanswered Question
The driver lingered near the top of the steps, glancing up at the fixture mounted beside the doorframe.
He turned back to the homeowner and asked if that specific light remained lit every single night of the year.
The older man shifted his grip on the parcel, turning his gaze toward the dark, rain-soaked driveway.
He nodded slowly, confirming that the porch lamp burned continuously throughout every dark hour.
When the driver asked why he kept it illuminated, the older man explained that someone out in the world might still be looking for their way back home.
The driver stood on the porch mat, his eyes catching sight of a small wooden table sitting beside the entryway door.
A Hidden Picture
A dark wooden frame rested on top of the small table, illuminated directly by the overhead lantern.
Inside the frame, a photograph showed the elderly man years earlier, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with a young woman smiling at the camera.
The driver pointed down at the frame and asked if the woman in the photograph was his daughter.
The older man set his parcel down and picked up the photo frame with both hands, holding it close to his chest.
He looked down at the photograph and explained that she had left home many years ago.
He shared that time had passed and they had gradually lost touch, never crossing paths again over the intervening years.
A Beacon In The Dark
The elderly man looked back up from the glass, his eyes holding steady on the delivery driver’s face.
He admitted that she might never return down the walkway or step onto the front porch again.
However, he explained that if she ever did decide to come back, he wanted to make sure there was still a light burning for her.
The driver lowered his head slightly, his grip on his bag strap easing as he listened to the man’s words.
He looked up at the older man and told him to keep the light burning bright night after night.
The driver turned around and stepped down off the wooden porch, walking back into the falling rain toward his vehicle.
The old man stood motionless on the porch, framed inside the warm doorway as raindrops caught the glow of the lantern above.
