A Fast Chase Down the Street
Paws struck the asphalt as the golden retriever sprinted down the sunlit suburban road, clutching a plastic bottle of milk tightly between his teeth.
Behind him, a man in a navy apron ran at full speed, waving his arms and shouting for the animal to stop.
The dog did not look back. He kept his grip firm on the jug handle, dodging past parked cars and turning toward the sidewalk at the end of the block.
The shopkeeper slowed to a jog, gasping for breath as he tracked the golden tail disappearing behind a low brick wall.
An Unexpected Delivery
Near the curb sat an elderly man resting against the bricks, his left leg extended straight out inside a thick white plaster cast.
Beside him, an older woman in a weathered coat sat on a folded blanket, her hands resting quietly in her lap.
The retriever slowed to a steady walk, lowering his head and gently setting the unopened bottle of milk onto the ground directly between the man’s feet.
The injured man leaned forward, his mouth parting slightly as he reached down to pat the dog’s golden fur.
Behind a thick tree trunk just a few yards away, the shopkeeper stopped dead in his tracks.
His arms dropped to his sides. His shouting ceased instantly as he watched the dog lean into the woman’s shoulder.
The shopkeeper took half a step backward behind the bark, lowering his eyes toward the pavement before turning around to walk back the way he came.
Loading the Cart
Back outside Arthur’s Milk Shop, the man pushed through the front doors carrying two heavy brown paper grocery bags.
Both bags were packed to the brim with fresh loaves of bread, bright red apples, bananas, and cartons of dairy.
He loaded the bags into the flatbed of his teal electric delivery trike, checking each handle to ensure nothing tipped over.
Fastening the strap of a black helmet beneath his chin, he climbed onto the seat and twisted the throttle, steering the trike out into the roadway.
A Warm Gathering by the Curb
The green trike rolled steadily back down the quiet street, its electric motor humming along the curb line.
He pulled the vehicle to a stop right alongside the brick wall where the couple and the dog were still gathered.
The shopkeeper stepped off the trike, lifted both grocery bags from the cargo bed, and carried them across the asphalt.
He placed the bags gently onto the ground in front of the woman and the injured man with the cast.
He crouched down on one knee at their eye level, placing a hand on the retriever’s neck while all three adults smiled and spoke in the warm afternoon light.
