An Unexpected Discovery On The Asphalt
Daniel bent down and picked up a dark leather wallet lying flat against the gray pavement of a busy store parking lot.
He turned the worn leather casing open in his palms, checking the interior pockets for identification or cash.
There were no paper bills sliding out from the main compartment.
Instead, a small color photograph of a smiling family rested against the front window of the clear plastic sleeve.
Behind the photograph, a folded piece of white lined paper protruded slightly from the edge of the slot.
Daniel pulled the paper free and unfolded the neat creases with his thumbs.
Handwritten black ink filled the top lines of the small page, starting with the phrase, “If you’re reading this…”
He paused and looked back down into the open leather flap to see if anything else was hidden inside.
A Phone Call In The Parking Lot
Behind the clear plastic driver’s license card, a narrow slip of paper revealed a handwritten phone number written in dark blue ink.
Daniel pulled his mobile phone from his jacket pocket and tapped the numbers directly into his keypad.
He brought the device up to his ear and stood beside his parked sedan while the line rang.
A woman answered on the fourth ring, her voice quiet and cautious.
Daniel shifted his weight and spoke clearly into the receiver.
“I think I found Michael’s wallet,” he said, scanning the store entrances across the pavement.
A sudden gasp came through the speaker before the woman asked for his exact location in the lot.
Within moments, a woman in an olive green jacket hurried past the shopping cart return toward his position.
Her shoulders were hunched, and her eyes were filled with tears as she stepped up to him.
The Story Behind The Lost Note
Daniel held the open wallet out toward her, keeping his grip steady on the leather corners.
“Are you Michael’s daughter?” he asked, watching her eyes focus on the familiar object.
She reached out with both hands, taking the wallet and pulling the note out into the light.
Tears spilled over her lower eyelids as she pressed the folded sheet against her chest.
“Where did you find this?” she asked, her voice cracking as she swallowed hard.
She carefully opened the paper again, her thumbs running along the handwritten ink lines.
“My dad wrote this,” she said, looking directly up at Daniel.
She explained that her father had passed away the previous year after a long illness.
Before he died, he intentionally tucked handwritten notes into his personal belongings.
He had hoped that whoever eventually discovered his lost items would read those exact words at the right time.
A Shared Moment Of Hope
The message on the paper read: “God can use a stranger to remind you that you’re not alone.”
Daniel looked down at the photograph showing the man smiling alongside his young family in a sunlit park.
His jaw softened, and he nodded slowly as she placed the paper back into the clear compartment.
She held the wallet tightly against her jacket, taking a deep breath as her tears slowed.
Daniel smiled gently and gave her a slight nod of encouragement.
The woman rested both hands over the wallet, holding the note securely as cars moved slowly through the nearby lanes.
