Trapped Along the Guardrail
The peacock’s long tail feathers twitched frantically against the roadside grass as its beak caught firmly between the metal links of a chain fence.
Cars rushed past just feet away, kicking up dust and wind along the narrow two-lane highway.
The bird beat its wings in sudden bursts, trying to pull its neck back through the rusted diamond-patterned wire.
A black sedan slowed to a crawl along the shoulder, pulling its tires off the pavement.
The driver’s door opened, and a man in a red flannel shirt stepped out onto the gravel.
Approaching with Open Hands
The man walked deliberately along the shoulder, keeping his body low and his hands extended in plain view.
He stopped inches from the fence, speaking softly while watching the bird’s darting eyes.
He knelt on one knee in the weeds, bringing his hands level with the peacock’s iridescent blue body.
His fingers closed gently around the bird’s back and sides, supporting its weight against the wire.
The bird gave a sharp flutter of wings, striking the man’s forearm as he adjusted his grip.
He shifted his weight and used both palms to guide the bird’s head and neck backward through the fence opening.
Taking Flight
With a sudden upward thrust, the peacock broke completely free from the mesh and pushed off the ground.
The bird rose into the sky, its heavy tail trailing like a green banner above the roadway.
It banked in a wide circle over the tree line, wings flapping rhythmically against the cloudy backdrop.
Instead of flying into the woods, the bird turned sharply back toward the pavement.
It glided downward toward the kneeling man, extending its talons to settle back on the fence rail.
The man stood up, watching the bird perch right beside his shoulder.
A Display in the Road
The peacock hopped down onto the empty asphalt with a soft thud.
It snapped its massive tail upward, spreading hundreds of vibrant green and blue eye-feathers into a massive fan.
The man stepped back, threw his arms into the air, and began to jog and dance across the road while the bird marched beside him with its fan fully displayed.
