A Sudden Encounter in the Rain
Water pooled across the asphalt as the golden retriever planted its wet paws directly in front of the patrol officer. Rain dripped steadily from the brim of the officer’s cap while the dog looked straight into his eyes, letting out a sharp bark.
The officer crouched down on one knee, reaching out a gloved hand toward the drenched fur. Instead of leaning into the touch, the dog spun around on the slick pavement and broke into a trot toward a narrow brick corridor.
The officer pushed himself back up, resting one hand against his utility belt as he adjusted his pace. With each step deeper into the dark alley, the glow of the streetlamps on the main road began to fade.
Following the Path
Lightning cut across the sky, casting white light over the fire escapes and wet brick walls. The dog stopped every few paces, looking over its shoulder to make sure heavy bootsteps were still following behind.
Puddles splashed around the dog’s legs as it turned sharply toward a tall, rusted iron gate at the back of an abandoned property. The dog placed its front paws high against the vertical bars, scratching at the iron while whining low in its throat.
The officer stepped up to the barrier and placed both hands against the cold metal. He leaned forward to peer through the narrow gaps into the flooded courtyard beyond.
The Discovery in the Floodwaters
Several inches of murky rainwater covered the concrete yard behind the gate. Floating against the far wall was a small pile of broken wooden planks, barely staying above the rising surface.
Sitting shivering in the center of the wooden debris was a tiny golden retriever puppy with soaked fur. The small dog clung to the splintered wood, its front legs trembling as ripples of water washed against its paws.
The officer reached both arms through the wide section of the damaged iron bars. He pulled aside a loose wooden board that blocked the opening, shifting the heavy timber clear of the water.
He slid his hands beneath the puppy’s chest and belly, lifting the small animal completely out of the standing water. The puppy tucked its paws against the officer’s uniform as drops of rain ran down its small snout.
Reunited on Dry Ground
The officer cradled the dripping pup against his chest with both hands, stepping back from the rusted gate. He knelt on the wet ground of the alley, lowering his arms so the older retriever could reach.
The adult dog stepped forward slowly, lowering its head and pressing its wet nose gently against the puppy’s cheek. The tiny pup let out a soft whine, closing its eyes as the larger dog nuzzled the side of its head.
