A Family Stranded on the Roadside
The duck’s wing twitched against the black plastic mesh binding her tightly to the gravel road.
Every small movement she attempted only seemed to tighten the dark, synthetic threads wrapped around her feathers and legs.
Directly beside her, nine tiny ducklings huddled shoulder-to-shoulder, their fuzzy yellow and brown heads bobbing as they watched her struggle.
Cars zipped past on the gray asphalt just feet away, sending rushes of cold wind that ruffled the ducklings’ downy feathers.
The mother duck pressed her body flat against the sharp gray stones, her chest rising and falling in rapid, shallow breaths.
Despite the roar of passing traffic and the vulnerability of their position, the babies refused to move toward the safety of the nearby river.
They remained anchored to the gravel, chirping softly and pressing their small bodies against her trapped flank.
A Helper Steps Up to the Scene
A black SUV slowed down, its brakes squealing softly as its tires crunched onto the gravel shoulder before coming to a stop a few yards away.
The driver’s door swung open, and a man wearing a light striped shirt and blue jeans stepped out onto the roadside.
He walked toward the huddle of birds with slow, deliberate steps, keeping his hands low and open to avoid causing a panic.
The ducklings shifted their weight, crowding even closer to their mother, but they did not run away into the weeds.
The man sank onto both knees directly in front of the mother duck, bringing his face down to her level on the rough, dusty ground.
He reached out with slow, steady movements, gently placing his palms over her back to stabilize her and keep her from flailing.
The Careful Work of Liberation
He pulled a pair of black shears from his pocket, the metal blades glinting in the daylight.
Sliding the lower blade carefully beneath the tight plastic strands, he made sure to keep the sharp edges away from her delicate skin and feathers.
With a firm squeeze of his fingers, the first thick strand of netting snapped open with a sharp click.
He worked systematically, cutting one section of the grid after another while the mother duck remained remarkably still under his touch.
She seemed to understand his purpose, holding her head high and watching his hands work around her wings.
The ducklings watched the metal blades move back and forth, keeping their tight circle and occasionally pecking at the loose dirt.
Once the final thread was severed, he gathered the crumpled black netting into his hands, pulling it completely free of her body and tossing it aside.
A Meal to Restore Their Strength
Returning to his knees, the man unscrewed the cap of a clear plastic water bottle he had brought from his car.
He tilted the bottle slowly, letting a thin, controlled stream of fresh water pour directly toward the mother’s beak.
The duck craned her neck upward, parting her beak to catch the liquid, swallowing eagerly as the drops splashed over her bill.
Next, he reached into his pocket and pulled out a large handful of bright yellow corn kernels and grain.
He scattered the food onto the gravel directly in front of the mother’s chest, creating a small pile of sustenance.
The ducklings immediately surged forward, their tiny yellow beaks tapping rapidly against the gray stones as they gobbled up the grain.
The man stood up, brushed the dust from his knees, and stood with his hands on his hips, watching the mother and her babies eat together on the roadside.
