A Final Path Together
A Golden Retriever trots along the uneven, grey cobblestones, keeping pace with a line of men in black coats. The men are moving in a slow, rhythmic gait, their hands gripping the metal rails of a bier that supports a wooden casket. The dog pushes his nose toward the wood, his tail swaying in short, controlled arcs. He stops beside the casket, lifting his front paws to rest them firmly against the side of the box.
The dog keeps his paws pressed there as the men continue to walk. His head remains tilted, his eyes tracking the movement of the casket as if he is trying to catch a scent or a familiar shift in the weight. The men keep their focus forward, their shoulders squared and their chins tucked toward their collars. One man holds the handle near the dog’s reaching paw, his knuckles white against the dark leather of his glove.
The Unspoken Boundary
The dog stays in this position, paws braced against the wood, even as the procession moves forward across the narrow path. A man in a long, dark coat steps out from the line, extending a hand to guide the dog away from the path of the casket. The dog drops his front paws back to the earth, his body language shifting as he looks up at the man. The man motions to the side with an open palm, his face set and his jaw tight, signaling for the animal to move out of the center of the walkway.
The man pulls a small photograph from his inner pocket, holding it out at eye level for the dog to see. The image shows the dog and a person together, side by side. He gently lowers his hand, placing a palm on the dog’s head and stroking the fur between the animal’s ears. The dog leans into the touch, his tail movement slowing until it nearly stops. He holds still, looking at the person behind the photograph before turning his gaze back toward the moving procession.
The Final Resting Place
The scene shifts to an open grave in the center of the burial ground. The men in black suits stand in a tight circle, holding long straps attached to the base of the casket. They lower the wood slowly into the dark, rectangular opening, their movements synchronized and deliberate. The dog sits on the grass just a few feet away, his back to the path. He watches the men pull the straps upward, his ears pulled slightly back against his skull as the casket disappears beneath the surface level of the soil.
Once the men step away from the edge of the grave, the dog walks toward the pile of floral wreaths resting on the newly disturbed earth. He navigates around the white flowers, his nose hovering inches above the petals. He circles the arrangement, his paws sinking slightly into the soft, damp ground. He approaches the center of the arrangement, lowers his chest, and slides into a resting position, his body stretched out along the edge of the dirt. A woman in a black coat kneels beside him on the grass, placing both hands on his back and pressing her palms into the thick golden fur.
She stays there for a moment, her weight shifted forward on her knees. The dog rests his chin on the dirt, his eyes fixed on the spot where the casket was lowered. The other people in the circle remain silent, their hands folded in front of them and their gazes directed toward the grass. The dog’s breathing is deep and rhythmic, the only sound accompanying the movement of the wind through the bare branches of the trees lining the cemetery path.
