A Lone Encounter on the Gravel Path
A small, spotted fawn lies perfectly still in the tall grass at the edge of a gravel path. The animal’s ears twitch, shifting slightly toward the sound of a vehicle door closing.
A man steps out of a dusty blue truck and begins walking slowly toward the roadside. He keeps his gaze fixed on the ground, his shoulders relaxed as he approaches the spot where the fawn is pressed against the earth.
The fawn blinks, its dark, wide eyes tracking his every movement. The man stops just a few feet away, his knees hitting the gravel as he crouches down to get a better look at the situation.
Clearing the Path to Safety
A heavy, leafless branch has fallen directly across the fawn’s path, pinning the animal against the grass. The man extends his hand, palm open, and gently touches the wood to assess how it is wedged.
He places his hands firmly on the log and slowly lifts it away from the small animal. The branch grates against the gravel as he sets it aside, clearing the immediate area.
The fawn remains motionless for a second before shifting its weight to its front hooves. The man reaches out, smoothing the fur along its back with long, steady strokes of his palm.
He continues talking in a low, rhythmic cadence, his voice barely rising above the wind rustling through the trees. The fawn begins to rise, finding its footing on the uneven ground as the man watches, his hands hovering just inches away.
Bringing the Fawn to a New Shelter
The man stands up, the fawn now standing alert beside him. He gathers the small creature into his arms, pulling it securely against his chest.
He walks back toward the open passenger door of the truck, his pace measured and steady. He tucks the fawn under his arm and settles into the driver’s seat, pulling a soft, tan blanket from the upholstery.
He drapes the fabric over the fawn’s back, tucking the edges in so only its head and neck remain visible. His hand rests on the blanket, keeping the fawn steady against his lap as he puts the truck into gear.
The engine rumbles, and the vehicle begins to roll down the gravel path, leaving the field behind. The man keeps one hand on the steering wheel while his other remains cupped around the fawn’s shoulders.
Arrival at the Final Destination
The truck pulls up to a weathered wooden cabin surrounded by greenery. The man kills the engine, the silence of the countryside returning immediately.
He opens his door and steps out, carefully balancing the bundled fawn in his arms. The blanket wraps tightly around the small animal, shielding it from the cooling air.
He walks toward the porch of the cabin, his boots crunching lightly on the wooden planks. The man pushes the door open with his shoulder, guiding them both into the warmth of the building.
He carries the fawn through the door, his chin dipping down to look at it one last time before the shadows of the cabin interior conceal them from view.
