Stray Cats Find Warmth In A New Handmade Wooden Home

  • 3 min read

Four Tiny Figures Against The Downpour

Four cats huddled together on the cold, wet concrete as rain fell steadily around them. An orange tabby, a black cat, a gray striped cat, and a white cat pressed their bodies tight against one another, trying to conserve warmth. The water pooled in the cracks of the asphalt, reflecting the gray sky above. They remained still, their fur damp and matted, watching the empty street.

A woman walked into the frame, carrying a blueprint and a collection of lumber. She dropped to her knees on the damp ground, her bright yellow safety vest contrasting with the somber environment. She placed the paper on the floor and pointed to the ground, marking out a square grid with blue chalk. The cats shifted slightly, watching the movement of her hands.

The Process Of Building Safety

The sound of wood sliding against wood filled the air as the woman began laying out the frame. She aligned the boards precisely, tapping them into position before reaching for a drill. The metallic whine of the tool broke the quiet as she drove screws into the timber, joining the heavy planks into a stable base. She worked methodically, checking the level frequently to ensure the floor of the structure would remain even.

She stood the vertical beams up one by one, creating the skeleton of the small house. The cats stayed nearby, sniffing at the piles of sawdust and the discarded metal screws. As the structure began to take shape, she added the walls, paneling the interior with warm-toned wood. Each piece was measured, cut, and secured firmly, turning the open frame into a contained, wind-resistant space.

She lifted a wooden sign with the words ‘You are safe here’ engraved on the surface. She held it level against the top beam of the house and pulled the trigger on her drill. The wood dust sprayed outward as the screws tightened, anchoring the sign firmly into place. The structure now stood complete, offering four distinct, individual compartments stacked neatly in a two-by-two grid.

Moving Into A New Reality

The woman reached into her bag and pulled out several soft, plush cushions. She tucked them carefully into each of the four cubbies, smoothing the fabric down with her gloved hands. She stood up and stepped back, offering the space to the small group. The tabby was the first to explore, jumping onto the lower shelf and kneading the cushion with its paws. The other cats followed, stepping inside one by one to investigate their new surroundings.

The white cat claimed a corner, turning in slow circles before settling down into the soft material. The tabby stretched out on a higher shelf, resting its chin on the edge of the wood. The black cat curled into a tight ball in the top cubby, its eyes closing as the warmth of the shelter took hold. The woman sat on the ground in front of the house, watching as they finally relaxed.

The orange tabby rested in the top left cubby, eyes partially closed, while the gray cat moved into the bottom right. The woman reached inside, adjusting the fabric one last time to ensure the cats were perfectly nestled against the cold. The white cat lay stretched out on the concrete floor just outside the entrance, while the other three remained inside the dry, wooden structure. She remained sitting on the ground beside them, leaning back as the four cats rested in their new home.
