The officer steps out, his face set in stone. He moves to the back of the truck where the cage sits. The lock clicks open.
One by one, the puppies tumble out into the snow. The mother is already there, nuzzling each one, her tail a blur of white fur. The silence of the mountains is broken only by the sounds of a family made whole again.
